I like Activity Checks. On my site I don't require everyone to post for it, I basically list members who haven't posted in over a month, and then I do 'rapid approachers'. So once this AC is over, if you will be considered inactive then you are on that rapid list.
I do the same for threads! This also gives me a view, like Space Dandy said, of who is active/inactive, who kills threads but keeps wanting to make a million characters. Allows me to give certain members restrictions on that kind of stuff 😁

As a member: they're a fine way of saying 'hey I'm here and active, don't think I'm gone just yet'
As a staffer: they're absolute nightmares to run. 'Specially if you know people are getting around and finding ways to abuse loopholes so they can get their characters in on time and then vanish agian. Utter BEDLAM.

Bouncing off this thread for some feedback regarding this topic, how do people feel about posting requirements every month or two months, but it can be cumulative from all of a member's characters?
E.g. Activity rule states two posts every month. Member A has one character, and makes two posts on that character. Member B has three characters, but submits one post from one character and one from another, totaling to two posts.
I think that's a lot more manageable at the same time sets up enough of a line to ensure members aren't just hoarding claims, but are still invested in the site.
And of course, if someone needs to take time off, I will always let them slide until the next Activity Check, where I'll check in again to see if they still need time off.

i used to do activity checks that way, where it was "you can use posts from any character" checks, but i just..... didn't like how people started slipping through the cracks. since imo it didn't really stop hoarding claims entirely - it was entirely possible (and common) to see people just sitting on certain characters for months on end and not posting on them. which is just as much of a claim hoarding issue as it would be if the person was just not posting across the board. it maybe hit one or two people it might not have otherwise, but i never really felt like it was super effective in actually getting at the problems of the usual "yeah just check in every month, we're good to go" checks, especially since i was dealing with a lot of people who made character armies (and was one of them).
which don't get me wrong, i'm not against large numbers of characters, per se. i'm just. y'know. if you have 5 characters, i want to see that you're actually active with more than just 2 or 3 of them.
if you're concerned about check stress, i'd say lower the activity requirement across the board (since that's why i go 1 post per month per character in an environment where it's common to see 1 post every other week per character) just because otherwise you're leaving a bit of a gaping hole for people to take advantage of. activity is just. one of those admin decisions where you have to try to leave as few loopholes as you can because if there's any wiggle room, you know that people are going to be abusing it so fast.
