I like to look around rl sites occasionally and I've noticed that there is a trend of rating your site with specific numbers to describe the kind of content you allow.
For anyone unfamiliar with the system, you give your site a number score of #-#-# (language - sexual content - violence) with the # ranging from 0-3. 0 means no content of that type and the higher the number, the more explicit you can get with 3 being anything goes.
So I wanted to know what you guys think of this system. Good? Bad? Irrelevant to animanga rps? Why do you think it also hasn't caught on in this sphere?
1) animanga tends to stick to its own resource sites, so the big resource site that requires it for ads (rpg-d) doesn't tend to attract a lot of animanga traffic
2) proboards by definition is 3-2-2 or 3-2-3 at max just by definition in their terms of service, and since i mostly see the rating in terms of whether or not that sexual 3 is allowed or not, imo, there's not a lot of point to it
3) honestly rpg rating system even in rl is kind of going to the wayside since it's been replaced by the "18+ / jcink premium" label since i don't see it often and it's pretty synonymous with those things in my opinion
as far as my opinion on the rating system, i appreciate what it's trying to accomplish, but in a sense, i kind of... don't really care about it? most writers i've come across tend not to be into writing super graphic descriptions of violence anyway (which, to be fair, that's not really my cup of tea genre-wise to begin with, so i tend to avoid sites that might attract those kinds of writers, like post-apocalyptic sites, but that's also something that tends to go with the territory) and while i do appreciate knowing that i don't necessarily have to fade to black, i've also found that i'd rather have more description on what kind of content is allowed since like... i've run into a lot of sites that are 3-3-3 but don't allow xyz specific content, which y'know completely fair of them to ban more extreme problematic content but on the flip side of things, that's then not really "anything goes" in terms of content (which, just for the record, i'm not saying i'm against content warnings, cuz i'm not, please do warn me for that yikes and super yikes content, i don't really want that, but rather that there's a difference between banning it and putting it in a bag v clearly labeled "dead dove: do not eat", as it were).
Generally speaking, I'm not much of a fan of the rating buttons, because from what I've gathered, most people find them hard to understand. For example, the difference between a 2 and a 3 score - where exactly does the limit start and end with each number?
Personally, I prefer offering rulebooks, where each member can write themselves how comfortable and interested they are in violence and sexual content, and to what degree.
VIOLENCE What are your limits regarding violent threads? Keep in mind that Proboards TOS is PG-13, so all threads must follow these rules, but are you uncomfortable writing plots related to physical/sexual/mental abuse? What about fights? Do you prefer it being implied? Fade to black? Playing it out?
SEX What about sex? What are your thoughts on your comfort level on this topic? Again, Proboards TOS needs to be followed, which would make all sex scenes follow the PG-13 rules, but there are still ways to play around with that. Do you prefer implying it? Fade-to-black? Playing it out? Or maybe you'd rather avoid sexual plots altogether.
As an example.
I think the rating system is more 'complicated' (While still a good idea) than what it has to be, imo. I think it's easier to go in depth by including the rating in your rules (or where else you'd find it appropriate), by being like "hey, we allow explicit violence, but in terms of sexual content, fade to black when the hands go below the belt and the clothes come off". I feel like it's easier to get the types of writers you're looking for by offering more information, instead of having to explain what each site mean by the numbers they've chosen specifically for their site?
Other than that, I pretty much agree with Kuroya .
