What is your take on giving incentives to members for performing certain behaviors, whether it be in or some sort of aesthetic reward. How effective do you think rewards are from a staff and member point of view. Here are some of the things i've seen staff reward members for...
Joining the site (usually limited time)
Posting (a staple of many progression sites)
Quests or participation in certain threads
Word Counts
Advertising/Recruit a friend
Playing with a new person

i mean.
the thing for me is that i've found that i just..... don't really tend to enjoy the bulk of any site experience that's too gameified. it's not my thing, never really has been, and while yeah, my tiny monkey brain likes "oh i put in work and get stronger", my rational adult brain does not like the absolute grind of just. i need 5 more posts to get to level 20 so i can go fight the rathalos so i can get rathalos gear so i can level up to 25 so i can go fight the nargacuga. (or the stress of "oh no i'm at level 5 and everyone else around me is level 20 this is not gonna be fun for me-") it gets really exhausting for me really fast, and it's just... not my thing.
which means i tend to prefer things with a lot of little aesthetic stuff, like the pixel awards for xyz thing. i'm a huge collector so it pleases my tiny monkey brain and all that, especially if they're things i can get always (because it makes me sad for there to be any limited-time buttons that i find myself falling just a little short of). except plot twist, i am also by nature a lazy staffer, so it drives me nuts to try to keep up with the maintenance of them (especially since half the time, not a lot of people are really psyched about them), so i just....... end up neglecting them.
i also really find incentives to be kind of...... limited in a lot of ways since like. imo you can make an award for having a post with a 1k word count or making 10 open threads, but if you're in a community that prioritizes short threads or dislikes open threads, you're obviously going to very rarely see that award handed out. it's very rare for them to be something where it's "oh i might not have done it except that i'd get xyz nice thing" so uh. yeah.
idk maybe i'm just jaded by my 3+ years of pokesites + vrmmo sites and my 1+ year of having pixel awards where i was the main person who cared about them don't mind me-

as those that know me-- on EH especially since i've been there longer to amass a bunch of crap-- i am a sucker for pixel awards. i will collect as many as i can on my favorite ocs. i will go out of my way to think outside the box to include an oc that would normally hate a festival to be at one just because i want the shiny little award for her. maybe i've just always been like this since i did a lot of competitive based things when i was younger but i love my little virtual trophy cabinet.
for posting progression, ZZ does have a points system where characters can earn their powers or memories back, but the beauty of it is you can stop at pretty much any tier you want, you don't have to go all the way to earn things back, and events oscillate between things that may require some combat to puzzles or more lighthearted fair so no one feels left in the dust despite being new. i am personally a big fan of "treat your memberbase with respect because for 99% of the time people will be fair with fights in threads" but i kno staff who have had bad experiences otherwise may not feel the same way may want to implement a stats system. it's not my thing tho. dont wanna do too much math in my rp.
i like awards for silly little things too that give the site its charm. like "threaded once in each of these areas!" "has social media!" etc. like it doesnt have to be progression or event based it can just be A Cute Thing You Can Earn.
tl;dr i like awards and points but it depends on the site system for which theyre for!!!

I like rewards that are ic based (threaded in x area, achieved y), and not ooc based (advertise, word count, joined at x period). I think rewards should reflect and show off the achievements that the character has made. Not the achievements I've made as an rper (met x word count, advertised x amount, etc.). If these achievements I've made as a player had to be included I think they should be listed on an OOC account.
If the rewards match my character's aesthetics / vibe a lot or I just like the look of it I'll try and seek them out.

I have a small currency going on with a feature that all OCs on my site have access to. It doesn't change any power scales too much, but is basically a bunch of tricks that a character would otherwise not be able to perform. Whenever I think of incentives, I usually stay within that realm- it's enough, I think, to consistently give people chances to continue building up to their 'ideal kit'.

I think what I want to say has been said already, so I'll just echo back that little things like IC achievements of having threaded in certain areas, or participated in events, etc. are great. I think membership awards (being a member of the site for x time, etc.) are fine, if only that they're really optional and can encourage people to stay... but really, awards should be optional. A fun, side little thing that lets you look at your character's collection with some pride.

mostly echoing what people have said as well - incentives for ic achievements, like awards or points are fine and i'm all for them. i loveeee little awards that show up under/beside your character's hover, it's kind of a way to look back on how far your character has come and what you've done with them. i haven't come across sites recently that provide incentives for word counts (but i remember being on one a long time ago) and i just want to ask why (to some extent, i understand the others on the list)? i'm biased towards short, quick posts but i don't think there's much to be achieved by doing this because it's going to force people to write unnecessarily wordy posts and people should be free to write how much they want/whatever they find easiest and most fun.

I can for sure relate to this feeling, I swore off of anything but freeform for a long while because of the time sink needed for relevancy. I've warmed back up to systems for the purpose of having a tool to resolve conflicts. I'm not big into levels and I prefer a more roshambo style system that includes complications to keep it from being too cut and dry. Such a system has its own weaknesses but I like it better than grinding. mostly echoing what people have said as well - incentives for ic achievements, like awards or points are fine and i'm all for them. i loveeee little awards that show up under/beside your character's hover, it's kind of a way to look back on how far your character has come and what you've done with them. i haven't come across sites recently that provide incentives for word counts (but i remember being on one a long time ago) and i just want to ask why (to some extent, i understand the others on the list)? i'm biased towards short, quick posts but i don't think there's much to be achieved by doing this because it's going to force people to write unnecessarily wordy posts and people should be free to write how much they want/whatever they find easiest and most fun. I think the only place this really still happens overtly is (most) Dragon Ball sites. I've seen it to a lesser degree elsewhere, where you have to hit X words to get credit towards a post for completing this or that. I'm not a fan of the series but at one point a bunch of my friends played on one of the bigger ones and I gave it a try. It was basically post splicing hell. It is probably my own reason for loving concise posts these days.

When we were rewarding people, we rewarded them for making open threads, taking open threads, and completing threads.
