I've kind of looked at trying a discord rp at some point. I'm under the impression it's a little "laxer" than forum rp. Has anyone tried it, and what is or has been your experience? Any tips for someone looking to start?

it depends on the server you join. some are really, really lax, but others are somewhat strict, to the point of imposing word counts :yikes:
if you want guaranteed quality, i'd advise going to disboard & searching thru servers with the "literate" tag...either that or try looking for "discord rps" on tumblr
speaking of Tumblr, if you rp there, you could try asking your moots if they have a good server on hand. sometimes little groups pop up in the community (from my exp. they don't last *long* but they do exist!)

Any tips for someone looking to start? I've been RPing on Discord with a couple people for a few months now, since I just don’t have time to commit to any sites, even though there are lots of cute ones out there!! I also have a google doc RP with a friend of mine. I generally find one on one less stressful/you step on less toes when less people are involved in plots. Overall, I’ve had a much better experience just shooting the shit over Discord as opposed to RPing on sites. My suggestion is to find a couple good friends you enjoy RPing with, ask them if they’re be interested, and just... RP with them.

Honestly, I can be really fun when it works, and really sucky when it doesn't. I used to be a majorly discord roleplayer, and I must say, when you find the server that clicks with you, it's awesome. Like when the members are inviting, their not too strict, but also not too lax, and they are just cool people. I usually aim for servers that have 15-20 members, because then there's a good amount of people that can be online, but not so many that you get buried/ignored.
On the other side of the coin tho, there's a lot of wack servers out there. Servers that just let anyone and everyone in are annoying, because it's just chaos filled with one misspelled one word replies, and some other ones where they are too strict, and suck the fun out of real time rp. Like come on man, it's real time, it's unnecessary for every reply to take 20 minutes to write. Also, I feel like owner tyranny is also kinda more common. Where the owners characters are way more powerful than everyone else, and make 0 sense. Like how are you gonna judge my character in a BNHA roleplay, but for some reason your character a freaking demon who's stronger than All Might and One For All combined?
Overall - It really is a lot of surfing. Try to find a roleplay you feel like you can click with, and if you find your not enjoying yourself, or feel like no one is trying to include you, don't be afraid to leave! Just keep looking until you eventually find that server. That one server that you have pure fun on. It may sound like it's grueling, but let me tell you, the most rp fun I've ever had was on a random discord server I joined on a whim. It's worth it in the end. (Also, from personal experience, try not to be too picky when it comes to server searching. I mean you can if you want, but that server where I had the most fun was just a site that permitted NSFW stuff, something I usually ignore. I learned that day it's really not that bad, and some servers really know how to balance nsfw and actual rp.)
