I've always been curious, how exactly do private rp forums work? Like, how are they set up and all that stuff? Do you just build it like you would a regular forum or nah? I imagine the process of making one wouldn't be entirely the same as a public forum.
I always imagined they were forums you'd just create with a closet group of friends/rp buds and not send out invites/adverts like with other places. I have been in a private discord group once eons ago, it pretty much was similar to a dnd session now I think about it.
I've also seen some forums that definitely aren't entirely public -- the full homepage generally isn't viewable to guests (i.e. in-character boards are hidden), and in order to register you'd have to join a discord server first or apply via something like a Google form with your info (timezone, writing sample, etc), so all in all they seem to be more serious commitments. as for subject matter, the ones I've seen are either very niche or very general, but I wouldn't take that as a pattern or an absolute at all
I think invite-only is a step up from that in terms of privacy, and then what mimic is describing as basically a tiny locked session between friends?
how i've always seen / done it is similar to how i make public rp sites but with less steps. if you have a private site and you know the people you won't need basic, mandatory threads you'd have on public sites like regulations etc. depending on the setting / what you and your friends are doing it could be even less work -- there's no need for face claim listing, member directory, etc if it's your close friends.
currently i'm making a rp site with my friends for a dnd campaign we've been pitching to one another and since im not a fan of the talking aspect of dnd we decided to make it a forum rp instead. its just me and my close friends, and all of the work is just world building, figuring out our own simplified systems and coding ... which is a lot less work than making a public rp where you need to constantly think of how to make your information accessible, easy to understand and without as many loopholes as possible while also figuring out how to keep people engaged, have the events/ story moving and hoping people don't ... do dumb shit really lol
not saying your friends won't do dumb shit because i know my friends will do dumb shit
just popping in to give my input since i am actually on a private rp forum with a long time friend and rp partner. i mean i guess it's easy since we don't have to worry about the forum presentation since it's just us viewing it lol. but like bonnibel said, we're also adding "world info" / building the world that we toss our characters in lol and that's the most work (tho i think the world building is a lot of work since it's just the two of us and we're super busy sometimes and we decided to have like 7 kingdoms and different groups in our world soooo that's fun :,D). but it's our own private little world for us to goof around and have fun with the characters we made.
we just made a site and basically have a forum to post our individual character sheets, a forum for our world info that we are tossing our characters in, then a forum for our threads depending on the character pairing. also an ooc forum if we wanna post whatever else. we also made it non-viewable to guests and turned off the option for ppl to join.
honestly, we could have taken it to email and we have tried some other ways, but personally i just like how neat and organized using a forum is? i make a category, a forum, and then threads to fit that forum topic. all nice and neat.
(side note: i'm curious how rp works on discord tho? but that's probably for another topic lolol)
Bumping this up because I used to have one with some friends. How we did it was through Discord, where we used the categories and channels function to organize everything. We'd usually have one channel solely for the main RP, and treat it as a whole story/overarching plot revolving around our characters (so, think play-by-post DnD where everyone plays the DM). There'd be a channel were we dump a FC, briefly explain our character's personality, concept, or vibe. And there's a channel where we discuss the lore, world, and how we want the plot to go. Sometimes, we'll add an extra RP channel for more chill/slice-of-life/AU/etc. scenes, mostly because our main plot tends to always go INCREDIBLY overambitious with some great conflict, individual character arcs, etc. etc. And like,,,, having a break from those is nice lmao.
We basically repurposed our private Discord server for generally talking annoying each other, and added some extra stuff.
