when you join a site, and get to checking out its cast, what makes a character really stand out for you? what makes you infatuated with someone else's muse and super excited to plot with them/stalk their threads?
Said this in Confessions, but I prefer reading from the perspective of vulnerable, underdog-type characters or characters with deep internal flaws. Most RPers write from that inward POV, and it's so much more engrossing when that's used to its full advantage, to see a character second-guessing what words to use, trying to wrap their mind something life-shattering, or just mentally beating the shit out of themselves. Poor baby, you just want to see them win.
If not that, just give me an active character. A character with a strong, non-stoic personality that takes what they wants and makes shit happen.
Both of these types of characters seem way more approachable in terms of plotting, too! I like characters that take advantage of the platform. Great question, by the way!
probably sounds really general and up for further explanation - but complex characters. whether it be morally, socially, psychologically, w/e else. i love characters where you can list down more flaws than you can positives. give me something to sink my teeth into, something to dissect about how they operate or think, a reason to invest myself. it's not the likeable characters that appeal to me so much as the unlikeable ones, those that don't scream "like me! care about me! support me! believe in me!" but those that just catch your interest with a question, a kernel of intrigue, like "just see what i can do, sit back and enjoy the show".
i don't need to root for a character to be invested in where their story goes, and that's how i get invested.
this is a little bit off the beaten path, i suppose, but i get interested in other peoples' characters when we're friends. initially i'm drawn to a person by writing style, but (perhaps a bit shallowly) i do not care for anybody's characters until i care for the person behind the character. or at least until we talk a little bit, you know!
granted there's always like, the "standard," in that in my experience people tend to get drawn to characters that are antagonists, men, or better yet, both at the same time... and i will definitely check out characters with fcs that i like first over others. but that's stuff that like. tickles my interest in a character. it does not make them an interesting character for me.
OKAY also i thought of an actual answer. i am VERY interested in characters that surprise me. my main writing partner is writing a character that i absolutely do not understand at all. i just don't know how they're going to react, ever! and it's not like, out-of-character, it's just. i cannot anticipate their moves. and that's super interesting. makes interactions feel very raw and real. it's fun
For a moment, nothing happened. Then, after a second or so, nothing continued to happen.
