Good lord. The question that always makes my head hurt. It varies for me, depending on the 'trend' in the community. But for me it depends on my mood. Romance, Drama, Fantasy, Action and Adventure, and slice of life even! Theres also humor, Historical/period adventure. Some Fandom AU's, Modern. Lord. A whole mix of that. But it all depends on my mood at the time.

Slightly futuristic. Like, more or less modern, but with slight advancements in technology. Honestly, I live and breathe sci-fi, but I don't get to RP on sci-fi sites very much, just because there are so few and finding one that's a "perfect fit" is kinda difficult for me.
I definitely prefer "angstier" settings over lighter-hearted stuff. Apocalyptic settings, pre-, during-, or post- are also really fun to me, but I'm probably biased because my favorite RP was... well, set during an apocalypse!

My favorite is urban fantasy or magical realism. Basically modern fantasy/supernatural stuff, like where you can have a selkie lifeguard or siren starbucks barista and it's normal. Or be able to use magic for dumb minor reasons like recharging your cellphone.
However, the time/setting is much less important than the fact that there pretty much has to be something fantastical going on to interest me. Usually different races/species you can play. I don't know why, but I just can never keep interest in playing a normal human. Like, it's a high school setting but you can play as a werewolf? Okay, I'm down! But it's just a high school with normal high school kids? Zero interest, even though most of the plots and things would be the same.
I don't know man, my brain is weird.

fantasy of one kind or another or au fandoms.
usually fantasy type fandoms though.
I'm also super fond of fantasy merging with futuristic/technoshit because it usually ends up with some really cool and creative outcomes.
But mostly fandom/furturisic type things because I love the creative possibilities.

♥ - Fantasy (the Rune Factory / Suikoden type) - AU (non-canon) fandoms - Corrupt government / dystopia vs utopia - Light sci-fi (I like androids, AI, innovative tech, etc., but I'm not very science/tech savvy) - Political/social prejudice of some sort - Duo-focus - Gangs - Romance, but it depends on the type and how it's approached - Coming of age / growing into adulthood - Historical (particular historical periods & areas)
Dislike - Slice of life (I struggle with domestic/small talk scenes) - Modern city fantasy - School focus - Rated X stuff - Supernatural (i.e. vampires, lycans, sparkles, oh my!)
The list will likely expand some day

Historical adventure is my favorite, laced with fantastical elements. I enjoy writing hybrid males the most.

supernatural/fantasy of most flavors tend to be what most often draws me in, though i've joined some sites that were otherwise. most of my non-rp writing is geared towards fantasy in one way or another and overall it's sorta what i enjoy reading most as well i guess? i'm all about magic and fantastical creatures \o/

Fantasy (Urban, old time-y, etc.) or futuristic dystopian/apocalypse. Mild Sci-fi (Pls keep me away from space drama like Star Wars or Star Trek. *cringes*). Supernatural things that aren't slice-of-life (Especially when it brings in interesting species that isn't just vamps, werewolves, demons, and angels. Culture is rich man, bring more in!), era driven plots like Victorian/steampunk, Sengoku era, medieval, etc. Gangs/mafia/corrupted government things or something that promotes group activities that can be less than legal. I do like the occasional modern sort of thing like school and all, but it has to have the right deal to it.
I don't like Slice Of Life, superpower/hero things, the zombie apocalypse is a no (Though they can be a fun monster type to fight, The Walking Dead is just not my bread and butter), aliens to a degree are also a no. And for the love of god. Nothing. Romance. Driven. I like romance plots, but the romance that has a reason and purpose and not just because lol. Romance has burned me too much when I started. GOTTA WORK FOR THAT LOVE OUT ME MAN. IT'S GOTTA MAKE SENSE.

I love love looove slice of life and romance sites. As a whole, I'm really stressed out all the time with rl things, so sites with a lot of lore or require copious amounts of creativity tend to drain me. I enjoy slice of life because it finds beauty within mundanity. It helps me to find nice things like that within my own life. Other than that, I tend to like survival (post apoc/zombie/etc) and mystery.

For original rps that aren't based off of a canon source, I love creativity with magic or other nonreal things. A site can be fantasy, urban fantasy, science fiction, or almost anything really, and if I find something really different and creative that snatches me up, I will go look at the rest of the lore and read over it for hours. Unfortunately, the more advanced and complicated the super cool lore is, the more I get intimidated by it and will probably not join. I have a folder in my Bookmarks where I keep forums I'm considering, and that folder has a subfolder where I put forums that are incredibly cool to read through but are too much for me to consider joining.
I don't really do dark, crime, or brink-of-war roleplays. So many roleplays have really cool species, settings, or plot elements, but they're too focused on extreme faction conflict. That's not for me. I roleplay to relax and get away from negative things in real life, not to go find more.
Otherwise, canon-based roleplays that remind me of everything I love about the source material and don't have too much of the above elements really pull me in. Usually for video games like Pokemon.
