what do ya'll think of open threads? would u rather plot w someone first via their plotter/dm's OR are u more comfortable diving into an open thread and breaking the ice that way? tbh i'm curious. like, i remember back in the day when open threads ran rampant, and yea i still see some opens here and there, but idk plotters seem mostly predominant now?
what do u think? is it worth it to make them? do u reply to them? do urs get replies? or is it a waste of time?
asking cuz i want to up my game and figure out the secret to getting threads /shot

I know I'm generally not the type to jump into an open thread unless it's created by a character that I've been keeping an eye on (in a good way, in a good way)... But even then, I don't always jump at them. I kind of have a hard time getting excited about a thread if there's no direction or like... "plot thing" I can metaphorically see off in the distance to get excited about.
If we're talking about getting threads, tho, I've never had too much of an issue on any site I've ever been on... But I think that's mostly because I'm a really talkative person on my rp sites and I make myself available — that, and I go out of my way to actually look at other people's characters and openly compliment/get excited about the ones that I'd want to plot with... Especially new members', since they're usually itching to get threads started in the first place and they'll usually write the intro so I don't have to... ///shot.
I've also been known to facetiously yell at people to make me threads and reply to me. That's my go-to method. L-LOL.
edit: Your avatar is cute af btw. Just had to let you know.

Nay. The secret to getting threads: grabbing people by the ball(oon)s and telling them you want a thread while proposing an idea or five simultaneously. B) Never fails. Always suggest some ideas when you go to others, though, because it's really annoying when someone goes to you and says "I NEED/WANT THREAD WITH X" and that's it. It's like "okay, well... you ask me for a plot and yet you expect me to come up with the idea by myself all the time? I'm not a vending machine for ideas, you know. |: " Even if they say no to the idea, they can at least bounce off the idea ad throw something back at you, or go "oh, yeah! Maybe they can also do XYZ" etc.
To expand on your q's... I think open threads are a good place to start. I never make them myself (I don't like aimless threads), but they are a good starting point when just joining a site or just getting a site up and running, so definitely not a waste of time. Most open threads at my site get taken at some point. Usually on the quicker side.

open threads are the rp equivalent of blind dates: they're for people who hate making propositions to other people.
so saying: i love open threads.
edit: nah but for real, i'd say half the time my core plot(s) on any given character arise from pre-planning, and the other half arise spontaneously from open thread shenanigans where chemistry is found.
they also give new players an easy in.
the occasional one won't ever get a reply, but you do have to have a good hook or it can make it difficult for someone to find an entry point.
the first thing i do on any given site i'm on is make, and search for open threads.

I like open threads, they are kind of like cooking without a recipe. Sometimes you get things you wouldn't have thought of without being exposed to uncontrollable random elements. Just like cooking blind you can ruin the dish though.

When I'm new on a site, I always check to see if there's an open thread and if the scenario is one I can jump into without forcing my character's involvement. If a starter has been sitting without any takers for awhile, I even more so look into ways of joining regardless of whether I'm a newbie or a veteran member on there. It's a great feeling when someone shows an interest in your character and your post without being prodded, and so I try to pass that feeling on. Sometimes I'll type one up of my own for the fun of seeing who I'll get and if a relationship ends up transpiring that may have not otherwise occurred.
On the other hand, open threads are kind of a gamble. Half of the time they've bloomed into very engaging situations if there's chemistry of some sort and commitment, and half of the time I've gotten role players who go inactive while posting. Sometimes only a couple responses in they fall off from activity. Whenever that happens I feel tempted to repost the same starter further down the line to see what spontaneous encounter could happen in a different timeframe.

Open threads are something I favor. When I was forum/rp active, I'd find these open threads and post in then if the character seemed interesting, or just for the hell of it. It was a hit and miss though because sometimes those open threads were abandoned by the creator. PLotting with people right off the bat is not always that great in my opnion because half the time they're all "Heey. your character looks cool. Lets moosh them together!"

My answer is "yay!" I have been absent from the role-playing scene since December 2013, a product of complex drama. Now long past that, I want a site where I am able to write my male virtuoso, open threads and all!

I absolutely love open threads. Yes, they can be a hit and a miss since people sometimes poof but they're definitely worth jumping in. Many of my open threads turn into something fun or later tie in some really cool plots you conjure up with new folk.
My experiences have been pretty swell with them. I bagged two ships cause of it (one really really cute gay one which ended in the characters having a painful heartbreak) and then some very interesting plots involving supernatural jazz.
So yeah, I encourage open threads whenever possible.

I was cynical about open threads for a lonnng time until a few years ago when I made a random 'character just walking down the street' thread which turned into 'oh shit there's a burglary and my character has now been implicated and now mistakenly arrested' thread which was wild and lots of fun. Obviously they can be hit and miss, but it'd be cool to bring the trend back and open up rping to more members.
At the moment open comms seem like a great solution too -- easy to get a conversation going and getting a feel for the characters without too much investment in the first instance.

'yay', omg a hundred times 'yay'
open threads are the shit, mang. I always make them and join them. I love how events and friendships can occur organically through them. it gives me a sense of thrill not knowing where stuff would lead to. mimics real life in that you don't know what's going to happen next. there is no end goal.
when i'm new to a site, I spam the shit out of open threads. it's the best way i know to acquaint myself with my characters as well as other characters. plus I'm shy af as a newbie so I don't really anyone at first. I don't really like making or posting in plotters too much. it seems more like work than fun.

i am 100% the kind of person who does not plot their character at all with other people, if i want to rp with someone, i just think up a basic scenario with the other person, throw my character in there & see what happens.
i find that way, i get a sense of what my character is like, a feel for it. my character begins to develop naturally whilst i figure them out & sometimes in the thread, something major happens where it's like "oh shit this is now going to become a big character arc for my character". THEN i start to actually plot stuff with other people.
it sounds like a tangent but yes i absolutely love open threads because of how i can just drop my character in & see what happens lmao

Honestly, I enjoy both open threads and plotted ones since I find they each have their special yields that generally makes them enjoy.
Open threads I enjoy for the possible surprise aspect, the unexpected relationships to suddenly be formed by my character meeting an entire stranger without any proper script. Whoever my character is going to engage with is unexpected, which is the thrilling aspect to these types of threads. Ultimately, I fancy them for the excitement of "Who will join me?!" because the information is not concrete. I am also a shyer role-player, especially when I initially join sites so throwing up an open thread oftentimes assists in getting myself going in the new environment. It is what makes open threads inviting towards somebody like me who takes time adjusting to a site's community/environment.
Plotted threads I like for their direction and ultimately, the end goal that lingers over your head. They are exciting, and as more features get added to the specific plot line, they increase in enjoyment. Although, I prefer these once I am well-integrated into a site to avoid possibly upsetting my fellow player by suddenly claiming I do not think the role-play/community suits me. Thus, I find plot-based ones are an improvement once my character has created those initial bonds and I feel more inclined to remain in the community. This being said, I do still appreciate when I am a newer member to a site and people are willing to message me to plot since it assists with creating a welcoming feel. c:

i love open threads!! i don't make them as much as i used to, mostly because writing? is hard? and starters?? even harder?? and plus i'm already settled into the one site i'm on (obviously...), but i'm definitely open to jumping into an open thread if it catches my interest (and i'm not drowning in threads). however, i do think it's important to have plotted threads as well, because some people operate best on having a guideline on where the thread is gonna go. personally, i think having a healthy mix of both, especially when first joining a site, is the best way to go.
i know one of my friends makes at least one open thread for each of their characters when the character gets accepted, and honestly? it's an amazing idea, and i'd love to start doing it once i finish some threads (i'm in nearly 40 and really with where my muse is at i should probably only have 20, rip.)
there is the problem of open threads not getting responses, and i do think that sometimes it's because those threads are - well, to put it bluntly, boring. or, it doesn't take in mind the characters on-site, ie you're roleplaying a teacher in their office after school when there's like zero students on the site. the best open threads are the ones that a) take into consideration the character population, b) are outside the box, and c) don't 100% dictate what the other character was doing.
i also think it's important for people to also take the initiative, and not sit around with a plotter and an open thread they made and wait for people to come to them, but that's another discussion for another day orz

basically i had become a big ol cynic thinking "is there any point in doing this or is it just gonna collect dust like dinosaur bones" but looks like i was wrong. sometimes u gotta love being proven wrong. that and gitty 's story about burglaries is kind of inspiring?? like wow, in my fear of "what if this thread flops" i forgot the magic of randomness. i know i got rly into the habit of planning ships and stuff w partners because that's safe and like, guarantees not being stood up, but sometimes i want the spontaneity of being blind and not knowing what's gonna happen. i haven't made any opens in literally years cuz i'm a wuss, but maybe i'll try it again just for the heck of it, since it seems like they aren't as out of style as i thought and aw ty forte , urs is p cute too tho
