In this thread, we can discuss how we advertise our sites and what we find to be effective as well as ineffective.

One thing i've picked up somewhere is having a place for forums that only allow one link separated from places that will do multiple exchanges with you. This gives you a renewable resource over time with the sites that posted in your "multiple ads" board. It also gives you a list to check when you are worried you might double post somewhere they don't allow it. In an ideal world people would realize that allowing only a single ad is shooting yourself in the foot, but until then i've found this is a great way to build up a way to consistently advertise.

This sounds terrible terrible but I literally don't have any 'specific' way to advertise.
The most common thing I will do is go onto active and well-known sites, look at their link backs board, and advertise to those sites.

What I did was have a referral event- in other words, for every person a member referred that creates a character, both the person who joined and the advertiser would get rewards. I got a few people from this, but they're some of my most active members.

I don't really like the advertising aspect of managing a forum. I think it's a bit...bleh, so I tend to only link back half the time, unless I'm in a mood, then I'll advertise. However, I can't really say that about everything. My group is pretty small for a forum, so I tend to grab people from a lot of alternative sites, like tumblr, aniroleplay, and roleplayer.me because I'm used to those sorts of sites, and I advertise on those sites pretty effectively, at least once a week if I can, unless I'm in a mood because aniroleplay/roleplayer.me have a lot of toxicity hidden within. Tumblr seems to be pretty effective for a lot of forums from what I've seen on the #rpg tag and the #forum tag.
I think that I do a decent job, but I also know that I don't do the greatest. In the past though when I was heavily into advertising I'd make a discord and pop links in the discord for places that would allow repeat posts, separate them by how often they let you repost an ad, and just do that whenever the right amount of time has passed since. I mean, I've ran some pretty unsuccessful forums in the past though, so I don't know how well I can say that works, but I think if you're efficient about it then it shouldn't have an issue.
I've also noticed that as a person, I'm more drawn to images with decent editing more than I am to alternative links provided in adverts. I'm an on the go lazy person, so I'd prefer to just be visually stunned, then move onward to reading whatever after I've seen something pretty. I can't say if that goes for everyone else though, because that's just me.
