Ugh, this is kinda on the middle but I just don't know where to say it and I just need to say it?
I was on a site - like two years ago - and I had a lot of fun. It was a hard time in my life so near the decline of the site - I was like a bit absent, but like...I had fun. I joined their new site when the one I was on closed and I kind of had a falling out with the admin and the co-admin since we just didn't really click anymore? Or at least, from what I could tell they did not like member input about that site in particular, but what have you - I just bowed out, deleted myself, and left.
Two years later, I realize they just opened up a new site - and they have mentions of my character. I'm having multiple feelings - the person who mentioned them, was really nice and they really did my character justice even though she died. I'm glad that my character was a good foil to their own. I was super happy that my character inspired someone to take what I have and didn't hurt her. However, at the same time - this is on a site that I had a falling out with the two main admins who I know just didn't like me? That I personally had negative feedback from and in a sense really didn't feel safe around?
Like...I have mixed feelings. I'm fine with the person I like mentioning the character - I just...don't want it on their site? And this isn't vague posting since this is literally in a fandom that is pretty freakin' small and there's not a lot of animal rp'ers around but yeah. I have mixed feelings - and ugh. I think I only know two people in the animanga family who would have rped anywhere near these sites.
I'm not so much asking how I should handle it because I'm too awkward to really come out and say 'uh, guys' type of thing - but more a discussion of how would you feel about this and how would you handle it if someone used a character you created in a sense, without your permission for site history or character histories?

Personally, even if you didn't have the issue of not feeling safe around them, I think that using someone else's char in their history (or whatever) without the original player's consent is not okay. A few months back, I had a player who had quite the vendetta against another player, and was adamant about continuing to use the other player's character as an antagonist in their profile, to which I firmly said no because a.) they didn't have permission, and b.) it was bullying because they were trying to make this player and their character look bad, and potentially prevent them from rejoining. So, as an admin, I would outright refuse something like this to be acceptable. As a player, I would civilly ask them to please remove references of my char because they did not ask my permission to include my char in their histories (or whatever). Depending on the situation, it could be borderline plagiarism, or outright plagiarism? Not sure. I imagine it to be like art, which has a creative commons license. If you don't want your art to be distributed by people other than yourself, you have every right to do that.
On a more extreme scale, admins from another site DID steal my species concept but I think that's a slightly different situation. I had repeatedly told them to take it down. They first agreed but instead put up an "alt" version that was still based off my species (they even continued to use some of my language). I told them to take it down again because they did not have my permission and they knew that, but they refused. I later found out they were making real money off previous members' species (likely without permission) as well, so I took it to the host but the host did nothing because I had no proof that these species weren't created by the admins. So, even with a creative commons license, it feels so... limited.
So, when I'm not an admin and can prevent this, I'm not sure what I would do...

So I like to reuse characters. I pretty much play a character until they run their course and reach the goal or whatever that character development may wind up being. Sometimes they do not reach that point but another character makes a huge impact on them and its enough to reconning it just... I want to keep the development.
So I rework the role into their history with a vaguely outlined entity that only resembles the other person's character in the sense of giving that development in their history and often times have them do something that would have been out of character for that character that takes mine down a different path, that way its not actually their character because I do not have claim to it but the vague idea of the impact they made on my character can be kept by me.
For example a character I currently play had a relationship on the site I made him originally that was extremely important to his current state, however I am no longer in contact with that person and have no interest in using a direct copy of their character anyway- so instead he just has an Ex-fiance (which never icly happened previously) that selled him out and they broke up (none of which is accurate to the original relationship), but it allows him to keep the development the romantic relationship had on his character without replicating it, I just used inaccurate events that created the same effect for me to continue onward with.
Personally, I do not see a problem with retaining the character development by creating a vague character that fills a similar roll as long as it's not done with enough specifics for someone to go "oh yeah its definitely so and so's character from here". But then again I may be a special case that really does not want to retain your character itself so much as the development made in mine. Not because I didn't like yours or respect what they did for my character but because I don't want to tread on toes. You may not even ever make the character again they may be left behind forever, at the end of the day that's your's to deal with not mine and I just want to keep my character as they are.
As such I don't see a reason to keep direct references when a vague liking of the role (not even the character's personality just the role itself) should do the trick just fine. Plus if you ever decide you want that role filled on site you won't have to wrestle with the issue of someone accidentally stealing a character that way. It just takes a lot of the issues that could come about when you focus in the role played and not the actual character instead.
This is the same respect I expect someone else to have towards my character's. I totally understand wishing to keep the development under the right circumstances I wouldn't even mind if you used my character's name as long as it was in a manner that was true to what occurred and not you skewing it. Ultimately I prefer to be asked and would not hesitate to confront someone if I felt they were referencing my character's in a manner that was too much alike and that I do not approve of.
Also context and situation changes a lot, but generally speaking I can understand keeping a role in your history for the purpose of what it brings to your character and feel it does not have to be done in a manner that completely retains a character that is not yours.

I'm in the same boat a lot of the times, endless. Some of the characters that I have, I have literally had for nearly 10 years, and have no interest in replacing them. It's kind of silly, but I have such an immense attachment to some of them, and not being able to write their history the way I feel like it just because someone I used to write with nearly a decade ago went off and got a life. I agree, Endless, I think as long as you're treating the character and the writer with respect, that it's more or less fine; especially if you know the writer has left the rp scene and most likely wouldn't care much. Neko 's case is different tho, because it's assured that they know that she's still active in roleplay. It's not like when your rp partner disappears and it's been years, even a few months. Shirt happens. But it just seems kinda insensitive to me, especially when Neko's departure was unpleasant with these people. I think for me personally, I would only really be irked if it was used in site lore. In a way, I'd be honored to see people referencing one of my ocs in a personal history, because I'd be like,,,,,,,,,,,,,, "me? my writing?? impacted someone else?? positively?" maybe it's just bc i crave validation tho
