Here's a discussion for all the skinners/coders/designers out there. One thing I've noticed between jcink sites and proboards sites is that the former prefer using coding designs with heaps of thin borders on the skins. I see stuff like: yo i got lots of borders. Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. yo i got thicc borders. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Okay so I whipped those templates up in less than 5 minutes so they're garbage but hopefully you catch my drift? What do you guys think/prefer? Is one more minimalist than the other? Is one style easier on the eyes than the other?

I love the former because it stands out more xD But at the same time, I also really like the latter. I think they can both be done very successfully but also done very poorly. Sometimes the excess borders tend to make things feel clunkier and/or more crowded when overdone, meanwhile the latter can be too washed out/hard-to-see when not done well. The latter can also get a bit clunky/crowded, but I think it's usually less noticeable.
Edit: to me, the first style looks "classier/sharper," while the second style looks more casual or more minimalist/zen, maybe?
In short, they're both beautiful.

it all depends on the aestheticsssss but srsly hahaha
i dig both and i dig all forms of layout and design shenanigans as long as they're harmonious. But if I make my skins or templates, i always think of the themes first and what i want to convey thru visuals. Thin borders are the best at pulling your eyes in. They give not only the sense of direction but also the sense of depth. Whereas thick borders are a bit harder to pull of in terms of depth but if well-made, it can grant visual cues easily. If you want something soft, the latter layout is the best. But it is also the most flexible as you can mix and match accent colors with it.

Honestly... for me it depends on the layout of said code. Like the first example you shown, I think It'll suit this site wonderfuly because it stands out. I like the borders and maybe with the inner gray changed to a faint blue like Pixel's accent color, it be good!... but im rambling. But generally I like stuff with boarders and such a majority of the time.

I would say both are lovely !
But it all usually comes down to the colors used and the theme of the site it is being used on. In here, both of them look aesthetic and pleasing to the eyes, as they subtly match Pixel's theme.
But the more I see I think that my preference would go for the first one
I have only recently started to code templates, and I am leaning more towards thin border than solid colors/thick borders. But with the right color palette, it would look great I believe.

i think i agree w/the consensus of this thread currently when i say that both are good! it depends on the rest of the layout of the skin or the set that you're making. personally i tend to just default to the first option (as it's just where my current coding/aesthetic is most comfortable), but i don't think i necessarily like it any more than the second option!
i think if you limit yourself to only using thick borders, you might run into issues with entire skins where things might run together or spacing might be a bit too large for the standard monitor size? idk! i think if the general design is good, then either form could work just as well.

I prefer the first because it kinda guides you in, but the second might work better on darker backgrounds.
