Oh man I love cruising around French forums because their trends are so different from this corner of the world. Here's an imgur of some screenshots of the top of some sites. Normally you scroll past a large banner image that takes up the screen to get down to all the info. Affliates/links to other forums can be as small as little star icons or stacks of books, they can be a drop down menu, or you can see in one of them that the tabbed table has a section that has the 88x31 buttons we're used to seeing. They also tend to always have top site links!. |

Ok. So I didn't read everything in this thread. But holy heck I would like to see aff buttons bigger than what they are because the size of them currently... Its near impossible for me to personally make aff buttons on my own. The dimensions are ridiculous!

While I'm definitely down for more visibility, I am firmly on the "please don't make them much bigger" train. Affiliates, really, are not advertisements. They aren't meant to contain more information about your site than the link to it and maybe the name. That being said, I would 100% advocate for 50x50 affiliate buttons, which ultimately kinda leave less space to work with, but are more visually appealing, design-friendly, and would look better stacked.
Whatever dimensions y'all come to an agreement on, however, I'd like to caution that new affiliate sizes should be offered as an alternative, but not as a replacement. I may start adding 50x50 spots in my skins from here on out, but not everyone is going to have 50x50 affiliates on hand, and you're going to lose more potential affiliates than you're going to get people to make a brand new affiliate just so the dimensions fit on your site. In a similar vein, regardless of whether or not you have 88x31 buttons on your site, you're still probably going to have to make them for other sites to host your buttons with.
Really, because this is such a deep-rooted trend, you're probably not going to ever really see a complete replacement. The best you can do is offer more than one size space in your skin - and even then, there's no guarantee people will actually bite. c':

I forgot about this I went ahead and made square affiliate buttons and set them up on my forum if anyone wants to affiliate with square affiliates.~ I'll add the winner (90x35) once my other affiliates start to deplete and/or when/if affiliates change to those cuz I have limited space.  |

88x31 is, honestly, such a weird number and yet I don't see it changing any time soon. If I had my way it would be 90x30 or even 90x35. it's only a small change, and yet it would make coding for the affiliates area so much easier numbers wise. But in order for a change to happen, everyone would have to make the change and skin codes would need to be updated, and it would need to be across all platforms and I just don't foresee it happening, sadly. It's nice to dream, though. Seconded! Honestly I'm still a fresh face in the world of forums, so having sizes that aren't set at 100x100 or 90x30 or just something that ends both numbers in 0 or 5 really is weird to me. I would love to see something bigger for representation, along with a set number of affiliates for that kind of system (kind of like the way sister sites are managed!). Another that I'd like to see is something that's just big enough for a title, like 90x15 or something like that? |
