Okay. So. I don't even know if there are still people out there who like dragon rider roleplays, but I'm totally throwing up this interest check, anyway.
Let's start with the basic concept..
The idea here would focus mostly around a single empire where magic was once common place, but within the last several generations has begun to die off. In current game time it would basically boil down to the only ones with magic outside of the riders being forced into the priesthood in a (perhaps misguided) effort to keep the gods appeased. - Now basically less magic equates to less dragons, which in turn equates to less riders. Which is why I want to play with the idea of corruption in the ranks of the riders. So. In their totally evil misguided attempt to 'save' magic/dragons, some of these riders have turned to siphoning magic from other sources. (And by other sources I mean kidnapping members of the priesthood.)
On dragons..
So for dragons I really want to combine some general concepts from some of my favorite dragony lores that exist. My thoughts thusfar are:
-Dragons have their own, full language, but certain words/phrases in this language equate to something similar to the shouts/words of power in Skyrim. (So, in essence you have a word/phrase that gives a dragon the ability to breathe fire or ice.)
-The bond between rider and dragon comes in two stages. The first is the initial bond formed when the rider hatches the dragon. The second is established only once both dragon and rider have sufficiently completed enough training to become full members of the order. This stage of the bond is when the dragon shares their heart with the rider. (Similar to the Dragonheart movies. And, yes, once the second stage of the bond has been completed the death of one will always kill the other.)
Other thoughts...
I really want a setting that's a little less...hands you everything you need to make life simple than what I typically see in fantasy worlds? So..I was thinking of toying with a mostly desert-like setting with some oases that the empire's cities have sprung up around. (I might even add in something similar to the Nile river in order to give a bit more reason for this to be an actual empire, and not just a slew of tribes spread out across the desert.)
