As the new year swings fully into gear, so, too, should we get our writing brains primed and prepped for a new year of creativity! This month, we're hosting a
writing challenge with a few rules meant to hopefully push you a bit out of your usual comfort zone. It's easy to daydream of summer during these cold winter nights; what other seasonal aspects might you daydream about? A big thanks to
vulpina for this template! Check out the original
here!
For this event, we ask that you write
four poems,
drabbles, or
short stories following the criteria below:
[attr="class","oooyee"]ONE[break][break]Each piece must be themed around one of the four seasons – winter, spring, summer, and fall. However, you cannot use the names of the seasons (autumn or fall interchangeably) anywhere in your pieces. The goal is to focus on vivid descriptions that evoke the image of each season without specifically calling them out by name. What is the weather like? What activities are going on in your setting? What sort of smells and sights can the characters experience that bring to mind the current season? Since play-by-post roleplay can often get caught up in the mind of a singular character, try to push yourself into writing about what's going on around your characters and how, specifically, they interact with the seasons around them.
TWO[break][break]All four pieces should have a connecting 'through line' that ties them together (not including, of course, the seasons themselves). However you interpret this is up to you, of course – maybe each piece focuses on the same character, or the same group of characters. Maybe each piece focuses on a certain emotion, color, trope. There's really no hard rule on how they should connect, beyond the fact that all four should be companion pieces in your own way.
THREE[break][break]There is no word minimum or maximum, so feel free to write as much or little as you so desire.
The event will run through
February 28th, after which new submissions will not be allowed for rewards.
50 bits will be rewarded for each submission (granting a total of
200 bits for all four pieces). In order to participate, simply
start a new thread in this board to host your submissions and post a reply to them for each piece. Awards will be given out after the event has concluded.
