MORTALA
ANIMANGA HIGH FANTASY

Mortala is a project I've worked off and on for a few months. It isn't seeking to be something it's not (mostly to compensate for the fact I don't keep up with role play trends).

Fourteen years ago, a gate burst open and flooded the realm of Mortala with magic. This enabled the long-oppressed average citizen to raise the boot that crushed them for millennia. The realm is full of political unrest, grassroots campaigns, and ragtag groups of mages.

The idea here is to bring back old-school fantasy, wherein role players are given an overarching plot coupled with plentiful faction options to write the path the site takes. I'm a big fan of writing sites to cater toward all crowds of role players (slice of life, shounen lovers, etc.), and I have a history of running pretty successful, long-standing sites (as long as they can be in the role play world, anyway).

Something I'm wanting to do a little different this time, however, is getting a focus group going. I want to align my vision with what will give the community muse. If you're interested in providing feedback, please reach out to me in some fashion (disc: aerie#0804). The only thing early-access will be the Discord server. There will be no alpha/beta period; the site will release at one time for everyone.

tropes:
— euro-adjacent medieval kingdoms
— asian-adjacent feudal kingdoms
— royal drama
— faction-heavy
— rogue safe space
— inspired by LOTR, GoT, & ACOTAR

EMPYREA
A ONCE-KINGDOM DIVIDED IN CONFLICT

There have always been kings and queens and a strict caste of those you have tea with and those who heat the water. King Andilet ruled just as his father and his father’s father ruled: strongly. Under his rulership, Empyrea saw the rich get richer and the poor stay that way. It didn’t help that the king was paranoid Taiyōkuni was ramping up for an invasion after trade agreements fell through, so instruction to his siblings and children ruling over the four Empyrean states to put weight on the boot caused anti-royal sentiment to fester more than ever before.

When The Cascade occurred in XX00, chaos ensued. Starving civilians equipped with deadly powers had no control over their thirst for revenge. Beasts popped up in the land and laid waste to much of the Empyrean armies and central capital, where the King and Queen ultimately met their end. From that point onward, the power struggle ensued as Empyrean royalty had to cope with military loss and uproarious, magic-infected commoners.

Fourteen years later, where the site currently takes place, the military has struggled to rebuild due to low recruitment, the more chaotic and powerful rebels are either dead or seeking the strength of factions to amplify their control, and the beastly population has been somewhat quelled and contained to the forested areas.

EMPYREA FACTIONS

LEAGUE OF LIARS
Home to an unsavory variety, the League of Liars is a rapidly-growing guild. Its budding infamy has its name on the docket of every government council discussion. It’s hard to eradicate the criminal group because no one is really sure who the leader is, and nabbing someone higher in the ranks is nigh impossible. Thieves, assassins, and general delinquents follow only two rules:
1. Always use foresight
2. Trust no one

NO MAN'S TRIBE
Whilst many people blame the government or vagabonds for the current state of Empyrea, many blame humans. No Man’s Tribe is a small village of beastmen, demons, elves, and all sorts of inhumans. Not everyone here hates humans; some are scared of them and simply seek sanctuary here. Whatever the case, no human may enter here without a Keeper of the Peace escorting them.

SEVEN KEEPERS OF PEACE
When everyone seems to be up in arms over control over the largely disputed lands, the peacekeepers emerged as a grassroots effort to reinstate peace in Empyrea. The Seven Keepers of Peace have no leader and are marked by a seal somewhere on their body that shows who they are. They are widely respected, but due to their low numbers can usually only tackle a few problems at a time. Peacekeepers hold no allegiance to anyone. Keepers are the only ones able to enter all lands and remain untouched. To harm a Keeper would bring the brunt of Empyrea’s wrath upon the assailant.

(UN)ROYALS
There is no shortage of royal blood in Empyrea, but each region has a different story with just how much control the kings and queens hold. Many denizens don’t even acknowledge royal blood, thus referring to anyone who claims such to be an unroyal in effort to minimize their lineage.

GODLESS SHRINE
Religious zealots are out, godless worshippers are in. The Godless Shrine was once a church-turned-cult, but with the awakening of magic and chaos in Mortala, it has evolved into something much more plain. Those of the Godless Shrine follow a religious text and believe in moral living, but they don’t necessarily believe in all-powerful gods. In fact, many members believe in different divinities or none at all. What’s important is that they live by a code that has the people of Mortala trusting them more than the unroyals with leadership—that is, shrine members often govern towns alongside the military. Sometimes it goes well, sometimes it doesn’t.

All faction positions are nested in the discord for the time being. My intention is to start big and then trim them down after the site's first week. We're still having very fruitful discussion, and the site is coming along nicely. If you'd like to join the Discord, just add me. I'll be posting our 2nd kingdom (there will only be 2 of 4 to start) and its factions soon.
