The night the house burns down, it is storming. It does not rain hard enough to put out the flames. In an hour, all that remains are a blackened structure stripped down to its bones and a brick fireplace. The last thing to survive is a girl, no more than seven.
The firefighters carry her from the smoke. She is not breathing. Her skin is soot covered, hair bathed in the stench of ash and loss. They crack a rib doing trying to bring her back and when she finally gasps for air, there is a moment of relief across everyone's face.
The world is blurry and unfocused. The child's lungs burn with every breath. She falls back into a sleep where her house is swallowed by the earth.
When Cecilia wakes, she is in a white room, tucked under pale blue blankets, with an IV drip in her arm. She sits up and she rubs her eyes and she thinks she is dreaming once again and it is not until a nurse puts their hand against her shoulder does she realize she is awake. Smoke fills her lungs.
Cecilia does not cry. She does not cry when she is alone or when she sits in a home that isn't hers, in a bed that smells of strangers. She does not cry when her last name becomes someone else's. She does not cry when she walks into the Silph manor. She does not cry when she meets her siblings, even when they remind her of the one she lost.
And Cecilia does not cry when she forces her new found parents to take her to the remains of her home. She kicks a pillar of wood that crumbles before her.
The first time Cecilia cries, it is late at night and it is storming. It is pouring rain. It pounds into the roof and through her bones, drowning her in a mix of emotions she cannot put a name to. She is staring, numb like she has been for months. Then the thunder cracks and just like that, she breaks. For the first time in seven months, Cecilia begins to weep. It does not begin gently. It does not start as a few tears and quiet sobs.
When Cecilia breaks, she wails. The rain drowns out her howls. Each crack of thunder presents an image on fire, a feeling of helplessness. She destroys her room. She destroys her room because this is not her room but a room in someone else's home and the home she had known is nothing but charcoal and ruins.
In the morning, when the first light of day starts to break through a sea of clouds, Cecilia lays on the floor and stares at the ceiling. Her cheeks are tear stained, eyes red and swollen. After seven months, the anger has left her bones, gone with a burst of thunder and she is aware of her own body and how it is both too heavy and filled with nothing at all.
