Just An Idea

I got to thinking about this a while back, but I've noticed a lot of pokemon sites really focus on the grind of catching pokemon, evolving pokemon, etc, and I realise that is the soul of the series. But, what if there was a way for us to make a pokemon site without systems? Without catching pokemon? What if... you start off with your starter or your initial team, and then you can just buy pokemon from the site shop/professor oak, without having to worry about mod threads or grinds or systems or anything like that?

There would still be events held, maybe certain swarms that different times for when there active pokemon that you can catch. But, the idea is that this would create less work for staff, and also allow members to attain new pokemon without having to do pokemon battles if they didn't want to.

I guess what I'm asking is... would this work? would this be fun? I personally just like the slice of life/development side of the pokemon world. Battles are cool and all, but what if stealing or befriending a pokemon was more commonplace and instead od constantly battling pokemon and worrying about levels and evolution, you could just buy it once you got enough points?

There'd be different tiers, and you would only be able to purchase different pokemon after obtaining different kinds of pokeballs/levels for your character (new characters would only be able to use regular 'pokeballs' and buy from that specific category until they raised their rank, members with more posts who have participated in events and have been active could be able to ascend to using 'ultra balls' and buy pokemon from that category, etc). Maybe certain characters would already have certain tiers(like gym leaders would have 'master balls', probably)

I just think it would be a neat idea and be a cool, innovative way to incorporate the spirit of pokemon and its expansive world without actually having to feel like you have to physically level up everything and go through tons of mod threads just to get somewhere.

But what would be the other things to consider? Would this actually work in reality?

what do you want to know? my height, hobbies, quirks, the color of my underwear?
listen you mention "no systems pokemon site", i once again beg into the void for a detective pikachu style pokemon site.

because like. honestly, i don't think there's a way to 100% separate out the full. concept of the battling and training and catching and all that from a traditional pokemon site. i really don't. just because it's something that's more or less part and parcel for the experience. just as, y'know, most people are gonna be pretty disappointed to go into a marvel movie only to find out it's a cheesy romcom (unless it's venom, then we're in love because in this house we support eddie's romance with a carnivorous alien from outer space), most people don't want to join a more traditional trainer-focused pokemon site and, y'know, not get that pokemon trainer experience.

but like. gods. all i want from a pokemon site now is just. no more levels. no more movesets. no more battling, no more capturing, no more training to be the very best. i want a site that's basically real life but pokemon exist a lot like pets and like. sure there's a league but it's not the focus. you buy the evolutions from the shop. new pokemon too. because they're not the focus either. the focus is you, chilling, living your life, but instead of a cat, you have a purrloin and that's your life now.

aka i am once again asking the pokemon fandom to give me the detective pikachu style site we all deserve, thank you.

THIS. YES. This is what I mean. This is what I want. I just want a pokemon site where everyone is vibing and they have their pokemon, but like there's no competitions, but like maybe battles every now and again. Like a harvest moon site... but with... pokemon. It can be detective pikachu if it means no more mindless training/capturing/levels etc.

honestly i would consider just letting people choose their benchmarks for new pokemon/evolutions.

I know I'm the hippie in the Pokemon community that says "the game's better if we just let people vibe" but it's kinda true? If you want Just Vibing, delete all systems and like idk only make Legendaries and Mythicals unable to be played. Or put those behind a paywall if you want something to earn? "but jungler, won't people godmod with legendaries?" you ask, but I can whisper something powerful in your ear: you can say no. You can tell people to stop. You can ask bad faith players to leave. You can tell people to their face that you're not comfortable playing out a power fantasy where you're a meaningless minor character.

And ultimately that ties into my Pokemon philosophy: why "unlock" anything? Let players start as senior trainers, beginner trainers, intermediate trainers, the guy that's been at this for years and still sucks, the chick that never wanted to battle her pokemon, and you'd be surprised what people do.

That would ultimately make the Harvest Moon style come to fruition. But that's just My Thoughts, personally.

she's the wicked witch of the EAST bro

I would 110% love something like this. Let me just vibe with my characters and my Pokemon so they can vibe with other people's characters and Pokemon. Let me have "real life" Pokemon. Where there's more than just Nurse Joy and the Officer Jenny who have companion Pokemon that help them do their jobs. Gimme therapy pokemon, teaching pokemon, pokemon that help cook - etc.

If people want to do battles or coordinating competitions - you can always just rp it out for flavor and fun. Basically like what they do in the anime but words. Coin flip for a winner if you really can't pick but, at least in my case, I'd just be like "oh yeah sure, you can kick my guy's ass. he sucks at battling" S:LKDJDKL:JF.

If people want to do "real" battles, they can always use Pokemon Showdown and just battle each other off-site.

(straight up honest though if the site was on PB I would only stare at it from afar and love it's existence since PB and I don't get along :LKSDJFD:L)

I don’t know if a lot of them are still active / alive right now but there have been multiple sites, including HOENN, that have succeeded with systems you’ve described.

Most Pokemon Special based RPs shy away from catching Pokemon. Generally, you start with a higher number of Pokemon you select (10 was the norm afaik) and acquire others through that specific site’s system. Pokemon Special RPs tended to have a heavier focus on the exploration of canon characters and their relationships.

One of my favorite systems was from a site called Predormitum. You started with whatever Pokemon you wanted up to a certain number. From there, you would acquire Pokemon via spending money or as a freebie reward from participating in events. It was pretty lax but I liked the freeform and limited nature of acquiring them. Most people had more than enough to work with but few enough that their choices felt meaningful.

HOENN has something similar where you can straight up buy your Pokemon with on site currency via a Gachapon system. If you wanted to, you could acquire a slew of Pokemon without ever having to roleplay out the capture or grind anything.

Since I know HOENN the most intimately, and it’s been around for more than two years, I’ll just use it as confirmation that the following can work.

- Befriending Pokemon for capture instead of battling (most trainers go the befriending route iirc).

- No levels.

- Evolution is a simple all encompassing item that is both cheap (10 posts worth or finishing a specific 5 post thread) and commonly given out as rewards.

- Create a character that does not battle. (more common than those that are hardcore battlers. a lot of our members actually hate battling LOL)

Most of the threads we have are either shipping related or exploring the connections and relationships our characters have with each other. While battling is something that’s allowed, very few character and trainers partake outside of faction vs faction events. Those are more styled like DND raids than actual written out battles.

So yes, a site like these can work and I believe multiple sites have done so within the last couple of years.

That being said, I also think finding a site that does not allow trainers to battle will probably never happen. Not because they’re a package deal but because RP is slowly trending to becoming less restrictive with time. If you don’t want to battle or get caught up in systems, then don’t partake in that aspect of the site. If you want to just vibe and do SoL things, then do so!

Every large site can be a SoL site if you want it to be! That’s the great thing about roleplay, you get to decide what you want to write and pursue.

Unrelated, I think there have been a few Harvest Moon styled Pokemon sites. They’re from a while back but one had a really cute skin. Another cute one had a Pelipper / Wingull styled skin? I lurked for a bit but I think they eventually died down because people didn’t know what to do or got bored.
