Submitting the voice of dissent that I don't really like playing canons, for reasons:

1) I don't generally like leadership or "spotlight" roles IRL, so I'm less comfortable playing characters who have them.

2) I like to be fed pre-packaged site plots by staff instead of coming up with major plots on my own.

3) Oftentimes it's not clear from the lore what a faction would actually want to do to shake up the site in a major way.

4) Playing a canon puts more pressure on you to thread with people/characters (especially within your faction) whom you'd otherwise never in a million years, because if you don't, you might be icing them out of a major plot (and the desire to not want to be a Mean Exclusionist is already present in a lot of rpers, even when they don't have canon roles).

imposter syndrome is feeling called out by a thread even though you know no one in it is talking about you and no one who has talked to you has been telling you you're doing it wrong

Like, there's nothing wrong in RPing a murderhobo in and of itself... Provided you can find a community or group that's willing to entertain said playstyle.

I think forum rp provides a unique challenge to the murderhobo playstyle versus D&D-style tabletop, namely the lack of a GM. Everyone wants to be the murderhobo, but no one wants their oc to get murderhobo'd. So if murderhobo'ing is to be done, you need disposable NPCs to kill, but you also need an excuse for another player to be threading with you (because otherwise you're just writing a solo fic).

You can potentially get around this... if you have a site where staff are expected to GM the NPCs (so you don't need another oc to participate), or you have a very robust stat system / trust in other players to "play fair" when controlling the NPCs so that everyone gets an equal chance at the kill-scoring.

figuring out how to play around the narrative limitations of an oc with overpowered abilities is fun as hell

having financial stability has drastically made me go from "adamantly against being treated and spoiled by people" to "excessively treat my friends and family if i know i can afford it"

I'm pretty sure the combination of the two is why the credit card game exists

How do people handle their thread limits? Especially with threads that feel like a dead end?

The obvious answer is just to be honest, I know, but aaaa I always feel bad because I'm usually in need of threads... yet feel like I need to just preemptively archive ones that seem like the shared responsibility of being active was just not there.

If the other person is still active in chat/responding to other people I will gently prod them after roughly a month. "Hey, it's been [time] since you replied to thread X, are you still interested in threading or would you prefer to archive it?"

If the other person hasn't been active at all in that amount of time I assume they quietly went on a hiatus from the site, delete it from my personal checklist, and wait for the next ac to see if they're staying or going.

if we go to jcink i cant change my name every two weeks anymore
Isn't that a setting Jcink admins can set?

Yeah, the default is admins have to approve all name changes, but it's not difficult to switch that setting off.

I've seen a few jcink comms try to take over the space that cttw left, but they're all rl oriented, so I never had any interest in joining them.
