sometimes, i wonder if i still enjoy writing, or if i am going through the motions because it's one of my longest standing hobbies

i do enjoy it, but it's hard not to reminisce about the older days and how i used to be able to write. i'm glad i'm getting back into it, but i still wonder when i'm going to put it down

i wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them
For every slump there will be a rise! Sometimes you need to know that you can survive and live just fine without roleplaying/writing to be able to come back renewed. If you feel like you're going through the motions, perhaps it's a good time to step back and enjoy other things before coming back (if you're ready).

Tentatively... I am considering making a solarpunk academia fantasy roleplay site, especially focused an academy in a (presumed) utopia. Somewhat studio ghibli-esque mixed with academia, psycho pass, etc. I've been itching to design a skin, and I think it could be something interesting. c:

I think donations are fine because I do think even basic admin work, paying money for a skin (around 200 or more), building on lore and whatnot is a lot of work. However, donations should always be voluntary and members should never have to feel pressured or obligated to do so. Moreover, there needs to be a lot of transparency in where the money they are donating is going, including receipts.

That being said, accepting donations from members means feeling responsibility towards them- in a way, I can understand a site that doesn't want to take donations because staff might not want to feel like they owe the paying members some kind of in-character rewards or allowing them to influence site decisions.

This is a tricky line for me, but I lean towards absolutely no IC rewards (that aren't just for flavor, like a badge, a discord color, etc.) for the members even if they donate. The second something is accepted for that, it sets a precedence that monetary gain is the equivalent/is more important than effort... I don't know if this is the message that roleplaying sites want to put through to their member base. You nailed it when you said it's about preserving the community's essence and principles-- roleplay has largely been here as a medium for enjoyment without making it capitalistic in their monetary gain. I believe that once real money gets involved in site plot, character growth, etc. things will inevitably turn ugly.

Rewrote this ten times because I couldn't figure out how to make it not sound like bragging in a way, but if I'm incredibly vague then no one will know what I'm talking about and all ego is washed away, right? Right? Anyway, I have incredibly complicated feelings toward a specific trend in new skins - largely because I was talked out of using it well before it was a trend at all, and now I feel like it's 'too late' for me to use an idea I was once so excited for, because of the fear of it being taken as just another bout of trend surfing. ... Also residual fear for the reasons that talked me out of it in the first place, but. Mostly that... longingly staring through the coding community window, sdfkjlshfjkdshfjkdsh.

do whatever you want babe, there's no point in designing if you can't do what you enjoy.

+ The whole point of trends is to encourage people to be exposed to/try new things anyways.

i think we should start allowing multiple ocs with the same fcs on sites, and they shouldn't have to "ask for permission" from the original person to use the fc just bc they got to it first.
:100: it can be frustrating to try and join a site when every fc I want is taken (up to 20+ fcs). I think it'll definitely make more sites accessible if they weren't gated by specific claims, and fcs can especially be a high barrier of entry for sites when it comes to POC characters since there are much lesser POC fcs available.

As long as people are not using the exact same hover/icon as you... it shouldn't matter. A lot of popular fcs have so much diverse art that you can have two charas with the same face claim and still look/feel/completely different.

1. Simple-- I really appreciate posts that get straight to the thick of things. While I love some prose every now and then, I often feel pressured to match word count and if my partner is giving me 600-1000 words per post, it just means I'm taking more time to respond. I have RPed with someone before whose writing is incredibly concise and well-written. I appreciate that a lot.

2. Focused-- Ideally, the posts should be focused on what is going on and not just on the character's inner monologue. I feel lost as to how to respond if there's no follow-up action on their end.

3. Not controlling/flexible-- It's difficult for me to write with people that have very strong and set expectations on how my characters should be acting. If I'm being told that xxx is going to happen to my character or my character should be doing xxx, I'll lose a bit of my will to write back since it feels like they should just write my character for me.

4. Clear goals-- I don't do well with threads that are first-time meetings & wing it. This one is 5050 since there are people that enjoy it, and I can definitely do it, but it's not for me. If it's their first time meeting, I need there to clearly have something going on for them to do.

5. Pre-established relationships-- I love jumping into the thick of things. That means I particularly enjoy writing with characters that already know mine or there are prior discussions on what our character's dynamics/history is like. I think that's lovely to think about and it provides me a good structure to keep in mind as I write.

At the end of the day, there are rpers that are more picky (like me) & there are rpers that are more on the go. I have busy periods so sites that are very demanding on activity or rpers that get unhappy & snippy at me for not replying are just not for me. I am happy with considerate reminders or open communications though! Totally okay with being poked or asked to respond/prioritize threads as well, since I'm forgetful. It's all about respecting boundaries and being understanding.

a couple of ppl who know me rl: you should apply to (big design company) ! they have a couple entry jobs, good pay, and good benefits + it's up your alley
me, looking at the joblisting: ok actually i can probably do that
me, beginning the application process: ...wait i don't have a portfolio nvm
me, an hour later, after getting bored and sifting through a bunch of folders in my laptop: what do you mean i have a lot of design templates, layouts, mockups, logos, and graphics that i've done when i was bored all because i hyperfixated on my ocs? what do you mean i have what might be enough to constitute a proper portfolio--
i don't want to discourage you, but i want to save you some heartache down the road. as someone who works in the design industry, i would not recommend putting rp stuff in your professional portfolio.

they will ask you if you have rights over any art you post in your portfolio. but honestly, you should be showing mostly original work in your portfolio, because it is a showcase of your skills, not someone else's. your interviewers will always ask how much of the work you did and what was your role. if you can't answer that, then you will be straight up rejected.

there's plenty of things you can do on your own that you can put in your portfolio, like redesigns or case studies. if you put rp/oc things into your portfolio, just prepare to explain what it is and your design decisions.

honestly though i would love to see more people in the rpc become designers. happy to provide resources if people would like them!

100% this

Please do not use any of your roleplaying things in your portfolio. You will be asked specifically in your interviews how much of the work in your portfolio is solely done by you, and how much of it is not your work. The only things that you can include in your portfolio that isn't original work are things that have a creative common license, such as adobe fonts and icons (fontawesome).

The design industry isn't the... nicest, sometimes, so please do be careful and protect yourself.
