I stopped being friends with one of my childhood friends because he couldn't not be a dick to me during a group project. He was incredibly bossy and didn't want to take responsibility for anything, because he wanted to attend a stupid prom. The final straw was when he yelled at me for something that was his fault.

I haven't been in school in a long time but I have a vague memory of being able to skip the 'group' part of a group project.

I had no friends in that class and due to how numbers worked out, everyone else was able to fit into a correctly sized group while leaving me out. I asked the teacher if I could just do the project by myself. I received permission and got a good grade.
