I don't like to talk in absolutes anymore when it comes to practices that make good characters. So I am just speaking on my own preference.

I like fluid history. Enough of a framework to understand how your character has been impacted in life to inform their decisions. Over-detailing can lead to missed opportunities to make organic connections with other members. Like, why define an NPC named Bob who killed your character's father? Just say your character's father was murdered. Then instead of making a wanted ad about Bob you can just approach someone who makes a murderer and you have an instant plot.

Overall, I think interactivity is very important. If you create a character who doesn't make anything happen, isn't part of anything, and does little to react then you end up with a character who isn't fun to play. If you're going to make a shy character, you really need to lean on making the thread more interesting through external measures like using NPCs. While this isn't a bad thing per say, it makes me lean towards saying they don't translate very well to making exciting stories by themselves.

Rewrote this ten times because I couldn't figure out how to make it not sound like bragging in a way, but if I'm incredibly vague then no one will know what I'm talking about and all ego is washed away, right? Right? Anyway, I have incredibly complicated feelings toward a specific trend in new skins - largely because I was talked out of using it well before it was a trend at all, and now I feel like it's 'too late' for me to use an idea I was once so excited for, because of the fear of it being taken as just another bout of trend surfing. ... Also residual fear for the reasons that talked me out of it in the first place, but. Mostly that... longingly staring through the coding community window, sdfkjlshfjkdshfjkdsh.

Any concept or design trend out there I'd bet a good amount of money you can pull it off better than anyone else in the community. Show 'em how it is done.

I don't have too much experience outside of animanga but to review you need the following skills to make a site that many people consider to be worthy of joining

-People Person/Leadership skill
-Recruiting
-Ability to make or outsource a customized skin that no one has ever used before, but looks enough like every other skin to be cool.
-Good Writing Ability
-A compelling plot
-Flexible Schedule
-Image editing skills
-Artistic Talent or Money for commissioned art or a sworn statement from an artist with three witnesses in a court of law.
-Money to subscribe to premium so people can write segs /j.
-SEO optimization.
-Years of experience with a stellar reputation.
-Established friend group to mod and startup with.
-Discord chat moderation skills.

With all those things on the table, is it really any surprise when you can't find a site about a niche manga that has never been translated to English or adapted into anime?

The hobby is not dying, it has just become a career field to make things happen. So I'd either get used to panfandoms and very popular series RPs or try to lower standards a bit. The mid 2010's golden era where a couple talented people were hammering out skin after skin is over and aesthetic expectations keep getting higher.

XD is fine when someone else says a joke that you think is funny.

When you say a joke followed by XD, it is like laughing at your own joke. Things like /s or /j are better ways to indicate you are intending it to be read with humor.

i wish the health insurance people would just.... -strangle noises-

When I nearly died of complications from appendicitis, they kept having someone call every day to "check up on me" at the hospital and ask how much longer we thought I would need to recover, which became increasingly more rude each time.

The secret is you can just use an old premade or skin something relatively simple and people will join anyway. Life is too short to worry about strangers on the internet judging you because you can't code or afford a coder to customize a skin for you. When I launch sites I spend way more time advertising than I do on code and I never have a problem getting interest.

I actually thought about doing this before, but I'm always scared someone would cheat the system. I just don't like all the heavy systems and mechanics that come with it. Like, I'm wanting to write in the world and develop my character(s) and their friendship with pokemon, not have to worry about experience/levels/math. That's just me though! I've been on a couple rp sites where it's slice of life, light systems, and it was great, but like you said, at one point or another, the admins/mods just get burnt out from events/pokemon spawns/stores, etc.

"a system could be made, but it should be a super light system. like "just pay for a new mon of your choice" and "pay a small site currency to evolve your mons" light."

I've done this before and it is chef's kiss because people are still earning their pokemon and evolutions and stuff, but like, there's less staff interaction, so it's more fun for everyone. I've had a lot of the same thoughts that you're putting down here, and have always felt like "Pokemon rping" needs a different approach overall then just like... a direct reflection of the games, if that makes sense.
tbh the harder your system, the more people are going to try to break it to get what they want. Give them no rules to break, and you'll find there's no way to power game.

which, everything u say u want, i feel, works extremely well with the Light System of just buying mons and evolutions. people who want to RP battles will still find ways to RP them, and people who just wanna do slice of life stuff can "progress" their character at their preferred pace.

i've considered making a Pokemon site with the light system and VGC rules (allowing legendaries but only 2 "restricted" ones and you have to buy those thru activity), just because i'm insane and wanna see a site where you could feasibly play with any pokemon design, but i don't have time. it comes from a deep desire to pet landorus-therian for all that he's done for me. the sites i would run if i had infinite time...

also i was gonna do a point-buy for character creation where different pokemon have different "tiers" of starting value based on game rarity/base stats/competitive viability. to kinda encourage some diversity in character creation, idk. a mon like incineroar would cost way more than a chikorita, for instance.

To play the devil's advocate a bit, allowing people to power game and break things a bit isn't necessarily as bad as it seems on a surface level. Even in light systems, you are going to have folks who lack grace when it comes to fair play in anything that involves competition that you will have to deal with. Having a tight system provides more nuance into how you handle judgement calls when disputes ariseโ€” but my main point is that when you do have a means for people to optimize you can kind of channel those types of players into the same environment while others who aren't that competitive can enjoy other aspects of the game.

For a pokemon site for example- you could make the most optimal progressions all about pokemon league stuff, and that's what power gamers will focus on. They'll all go to league tournaments, while your slice of life folks and pokemon collectors will probably stick to other elements you present. People tend to sort themselves into tribes this way, and if all the power gamers are power gaming against each other in a vacuum and not bullying people who aren't into competitive play then it isn't really a problem. They're just nerds enjoying doing fictional calculus really.

That's not to say I don't love rules light systems. I think they are the most accessible option for a forum to run. They just tend to require more off the cuff arbitration that can actually make handling disputes harder and more frequent. Usually, power gamers aren't as frequent in light systems, but when things get competitive a lack of checks can be a weakness because you have nothing to cite other than your opinion on how something turns out.

A site where AI reads your posts and tries to figure out the setting of the thread so that it can join in and respond with little background details about what is going on around the characters in the thread. For example if we write that we are at a cafe it might generate a post about a waiter coming to ask us what we want to eat.

Someone pitch this to AI devs, Iโ€™m sure theyโ€™ll jump at the opportunity to make tens of dollars.

I apologize to those who requested affiliation to Animangads in the past few months that I did not get to.

As of today, Animangads will no longer host affiliates with non-resource sites. For sites that were affiliated with us, feel free to take down our button and thank you for partnering with us. The advertising section of the site will remain around for those who wish to use it and view its contents, but I can no longer commit to maintaining it and didn't have luck with recruiting a suitable replacement.

Staff can only cultivate a site culture to a certain degree. The larger a ste gets the more it takes on a life of its own. Sometimes this can lead to something greater than the conceptions of the site maker, and at others it can lead to ruin.

I feel like some people come into a site with systems expecting it to be like a flea market.

I don't like this mechanic, I think this one is better or more suited for my character. Can we trade parts of your system with parts of my system? Can I haggle to not be covered under this rule I don't like? This is a banned power, but like, that doesn't apply to VIPs right? I would use the banned power in a different way than you're probably expecting, so can it be lifted for just me?

I feel like a Wal Mart cashier explaining to someone that no, you can't haggle the price of the flat screen TV and no, you can't pay in lightly used socks. You need to use money. Real, actual money that is standard in the place of business. Nobody cares about your obsolete stash of Confederate dollars, you can't use that to buy a flat screen at Wal Mart.

I donโ€™t know how you can put up with it. 3-4 months of people being mad my dollar store wasnโ€™t a wal-mart was enough of that for a few lifetimes for me.
