Currently: Wtf do I have to do to make these templates work on a PB forum I run? and why isn't it working?! T_T

Most proboards templates rely on a plug-in to work, you can find it here www.proboards.com/library/plugins/item/494

Back in the day when pizza hut did free cheese sticks for new members with the purchase of any item I made fake accounts constantly and bought 25 cent sauce to cover the purchase requirement. Didn't even eat it half the time and just gave it to homeless people, I was just happy to be messing with a corporation's money.

sometimes i allow myself a waiting period before linking back/adding affiliates because a) advertising is my least favourite admin task so i procrastinate and b) there are certain chronic site openers that get bored/close their sites within like 2 weeks and i don't wanna go through the hassle of adding an aff then immediately removing an aff or advertising somewhere that no one's gonna ever see it in like 3 days. i don't like wasting my time.

Waiting a few weeks to link back is a great strategy for advertising to new sites because thatโ€™s when the new site smell starts wearing off and people start churning.

when you affiliate and advertise a lot, thinking your site is gonna get hella traffic and random interest, but after three days, you start to wonder if you're advertising/affiliating in the right places, or if people just aren't as into the site as you are.

i don't know about you, but I just get hella excited and impatient when anticipating the joining of new people~

An easy tweak is to reduce the number of boards appearing on the front page until you grow. 12 boards with only 3 that have posts in them looks dead compared to 4 boards with 3 that have posts in them.

Every snowflake was unique, but they all agreed on one thing: to make Deckerโ€™s life miserable today.ย

He took to batting them away with wipers. They whined like sneakers on a gym floor. Each pass left streaks of water that froze into fog on the windshield. He could see the shadows of evergreens along the road. The heater of his old Impala wheezed hot breath, just enough to leave a bit of glass clear front and center of the car. Lurched forward with his head cocked to the right, Decker squinted through the glass..ย

He inched through the rime, playing a game of hide-and-seek with an elusive yellow line peppered with more bothersome flakes. Ghostly smoke rose from the ashtray in the center console, where a quarter of a cigarette lay wasted. Decker drew in the stale smell as he sucked his teeth, both olive-toned hands glued tight to the steering wheel. The driver freed a hand and reached for his bad habit, bringing it up to his lips. He inhaled, but a strangled tug boat blared in his passenger seat and the vapor stammered up his throat. He glanced over at his phone, lit up with a picture of a woman in yellow overalls bent over with her arms wrapped around a collie dog. A widget masked her face, reading โ€œWorkโ€ hovering over it as the phone continued vibrating against a brown sack lunch.ย

He snuck in another drag, a proper one, and then tossed the cigarette out of the window unfinished. He took a deep breath in and picked up the phone.ย

โ€œHello.โ€ He exhaled smoke with his greeting and pushed curled brown locks from his ear to tuck the phone onto his shoulder.ย

His boss, Dante, on the other end of the line asked where he was.

โ€œOn the road. I canโ€™t see well, Iโ€™m trying to get there.โ€ย

Deckerโ€™s wheel began drifting to the right. โ€œYouโ€™re already late, Iโ€™m tired of you not taking me seriously, do youโ€”โ€ the phone fell from his shoulder onto the floor as he pumped his brakes and flung the steering wheel to the left. The car slid, kicking up snow as it drifted towards the side of the road. It buckled left and halted between both lanes in a canted position.

A deep breath and a thousand heartbeats later, Decker pulled the car into reverse and dabbed the gas to get back into his lane. He sighed and reached down, fishing through rubbish, soda bottles, and sandwich wrappers until he felt the familiar phone case. He raised the phone, no voice on the other end.ย

โ€œShit,โ€ he said. He scrolled back through the phone and redialed his boss. It rang twice and then picked up.ย

โ€œGioeleโ€™s Pizza, Dante speaking.โ€

โ€œHey Dante, Iโ€”โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t answer the phone right now. Leave a message after the beep.โ€

Beep.

โ€œHey Dante, this is Decker. I dropped the phone and about drove into the ditch. Iโ€™m still on my way, about ten minutes out, I think.โ€

Decker pressed his foot against the gas pedal, traveling forward at a careful pace again. He crested a hill, turning along a winding upward curve. The snow gave him a break, only lightly salting his windows now. He let a relieved sigh escape his lungs and reached for his packet of Camels. Halfway through pulling a fresh smoke out, he glanced back at the phone and pushed the death stick back into its place.ย

He pulled a name up on his phone, โ€œMarcyโ€, and hovered his finger over the call button. He didn't call her. His last regret.

Hi everyone!  I'm just really curious about the general climate re: hosting preferences right now.  Do folks these days tend to prefer jcink, proboards, or something else?  As far as staffing sites, I'm most familiar with jcink and somewhat well-versed with Xenforo, but I've always been interested in touching proboards.  I haven't written on one in a solid decade, so I'm very interested in hearing about the pros and cons of potentially starting a site on it!

... is what I would say if I weren't retired from staffing.
This is fine.

Proboards has recent posts which is a format some perfer for quickly viewing all the posts of they day. Proboards also runs through cloud flare which is trusted for DDOS protection from places like facebook, twitter, and linked in. Proboards doesn't allow the use of html but you can use plug ins for templates.

JCink has a wider adoption rate, the ability to post from whatever account you are linked to, and affordable options to host mature content. JCink has some problems with DDOS from time to tiem. JCink allows you to enable parsed html.

To be honest discord has really taken over a lot of the user interface experience either way at this point. These days I look at discord to see if someone posted for me. It is where most people plot.

There is a malicious redirect ad circulating proboards at the moment, don't think anyone here would fall for it, but it isn't on your end if you saw it and were worried.

I hope this helps, I apologize if I misunderstood or if this isn't helpful. I would guess your last custom field is hobby or something which is pulling the word "writer" into your link field and proboards will read that as an empty value and produce your current page. An if statement should help to pick out the right custom field. The way i've seen link wrapping done is with two if statements: one to open the link and another to close it, which is ideal when you don't want the object to go away when the custom field is empty.

//Check each custom field. If one is called Application, open up the beginning of a link to wrap around your span/div/whatever. If not the code will skip this statement.

{foreach $[user.mini_custom_field]}{if $[user.mini_custom_field.name] == "Application"}<a href="$[user.mini_custom_field.value]">{/if}{/foreach}

//Create the contents coded in the class around the word Application. This will populate even if the statement above it is not true, but it will not have a link around it. This means you can style it to appear differently if it isn't linked. (.longThing {} vs .longThing a {})

<span class="longThing">Application</span>

//If the first statement was true, then this statement will be true as well. This tells the link to close.

{foreach $[user.mini_custom_field]}{if $[user.mini_custom_field.name] == "Application"}</a>{/if}{/foreach}
