i also picked up the ( parenthesis ) trait from the rp community and it's so cute that other ppl did the same thing LMAO

i think my general rp quirk is i never take my prose very seriously. i love dropping jokes, shitty little hyperspecific metaphors, curse words, nicknames, stuff like that -- it's hard for me to maintain a serious tone for very long, regardless of the thread's subject matter. i blame it on reading the literal million words of homestuck multiple times during my formative years.

wait my specific rp quirk (and i bet posting this here is gonna ruin threads w/ me for all eternity) is hyper pretentious paragraph -> singular lighthearted sentence. like so:

a scene is set — a mother arriving home from a late shift; a torn apartment, a missing daughter. a sun rises — a knock at the door; a daughter approaches, i don’t remember, i don’t remember, i don’t remember. an argument ensues — a daughter regains consciousness; a mother sobs monster from the corner.

it’s a hell of a day.

i specifically blame this trait on hussie brainworms tbh

another specific rp quirk is i love referring to characters as nicknames while i'm writing to lighten tone. my gorl atlas is v. often referred to as "attie" despite said nickname being the exact same amount of characters and syllables as her given b/c the tonal difference between "atlas does xyz" and "attie does xyz" gives a lot of leeway for emphasis on certain sentences.

o also i focus intensely on word choice & language when writing dialogue for my chars b/c i always want them to sound unique. one of these days i really just need to start writing myself a lil dialogue cheatsheet google doc but not 2day

I never understood the appeal of a wedding planner, but boy howdy, do I wish I could just pawn this all off on someone else and not have to deal with it. *sweats* The largest event I've ever planned for were spontaneous three-person sleepovers - and I'm not sure my parents will be very happy if I tell everyone to just show up whenever in their pajamas.

Reading the last page or two is so weird to me.

I've been back on ProBoards since like 2018, even on some 80+ member and 160+ character sites for months, and haven't been m|m ships ever that I can recall. Like more than 50% of all ships on any site I've ever been on since then has been f|f played usually by two male RPers. I've only ever seen bisexual characters flirt with/romantically interact with other women -- I've never really seen a male character with the bi/pan tag ever romantically interact with another male. It's to the point to where I'd be pleasantly surprised in a site if I ever saw it, just because I've never seen it before and thought the lack of it was weird.

Granted, the sites I've been on have had a low % of ships per characters, which I always attributed to the fact that many characters simply weren't active enough to get into a ship or had this long list of specific and weird requirements for a final that nobody wanted to take (IE: You MUST have THIS FC, you must have THIS personality, you must be okay with XYZ limiting factors on how you RP). It's also partially due to site demographics, which seem to skew heavily towards women to the point to where a lot of sites I join end up easily 75F/25M or more. I think current one was literally like 85F/15M for a bit until I noticed and started providing incentives to roll a male character... which turned it into 75F/25M, yay.

pulling this here 'cause i won't even pretend this is relevant but this was legit a v. interesting perspective to hear LOL

i'm assuming at least one of the sites you're talking about is the remnant project && part of me is wondering if the numbers you're seeing are b/c TRP is a RWBY site, and rwby's kind of a unique piece of media in the fact that, despite not being overwhelmingly marketed to women, the protagonists and supporting characters are overwhelmingly women, the villains are overwhelmingly women, the most popular fan pairings is a wlw ship are they canon yet i haven't watched season 8, and so on. so essentially you've got a piece of media that people are only going to consume if they're interested in female-driven stories, and i think it'd make sense that people who like that piece of media enough to want to write in it's universe are going to show a higher level of interest in continuing to write female-driven stories. i'm 100% talking out of my ass though but i've always been on sites where a balanced gender ratio was lookin' real good for the ladies so it's good to know that the promised land of Gorls exists somewhere

academically? i read through it aloud like you mentioned and also use text to speech (i end up on naturalreaders a lot) to catch issues.

personally? i type with my eyes closed and yeet my writing into my threading partner's face and run, it's their problem now

nah but i used to use hemingway a lot (and still use it academically sometimes bc lol 3810298045 commas r practically expected here), it's a simple little thing that highlights complex sentences, phrases that could be shortened, adverbs, passive voice, stuff like that. i never use it as an "end all be all" thing and tbh would caution against doing that but the way it highlights things does make it easy to go "oh, i used an adverb here and here but i think using stronger verbs instead would be better" or "hey, i can cut this ok sentence in half to make two good sentences", stuff like that. it's neat

wanted to come back and let you know that i've been following your advice here so far and it seems to be working. i'm a week ahead on my assignments and getting further ahead by the day. the trouble will come when i hit a motivation crash and have to switch to discipline-mode, which is much harder. i've been using the evenings to relax, though, which i hope will help prevent the burnout that fucked me last semester.

incidentally, a few days before posting, i wondered if i would have more success with treating my coursework as a job. i.e., "working" from, say, 10am to 4pm. what you've said here is a lot more structured, however, and it helped me to put a concrete plan in place. so thank you so much! legitimately vv helpful.
LOL IM GLAD U POSTED THIS ngl a couple times since ive posted this ive been like "god i hope this post on pp^2 doesn't like...ruin someone's college career"

BUT I DID WANT TO SAY! re: motivation crashes! the biggest benefit of treating uni like this, imo, is the ability to have what i lovingly call "fuck it days". fuck it days, as the name implies, are when u say "fuck it" and do 00.00% of what you would like to be doing. i am currently in the middle of a mild fuck it day rn -- i went to 2 attendance-mandatory lectures and thassit. and because i've been keepin' on track, i'll only be "moderately" ahead instead of "ludicrously", which i'm willing to take! and honestly, depending on how far ahead you are, you can chain together multiple fuck it days and still emerge caught up. i've had fuck it weeks, tbh, and while they're Unideal i made it thru just fine.

and i actually find that, after fuck it days, i'm way more productive -- 'cuz the fuck it day allotted an unplanned break which gave my brain the chance to rest a lil bit.

[as an aside tho: i'm, as i think i said in the first post, someone who's very intrinsically motivated when it comes to uni and learning and don't rly have issues with overusing fuck it days -- but if u (or someone reading this post!) find an issue with it, i think it'd be easy to be like "i can only have one fuck it day every week/month/x time period/etc". (following up on that is a whole nother question, godspeed)]

BUT YEA! honestly i think being good at college is 33% the idea society has of "being smart" (i.e. learning quickly, or even just "knowing how you learn") and 67% learning effective time management and how to keep yourself motivated and i really hate how schools tend to leave their students hanging w/ the last part LMAO. disappears into the mist to cry over ochem, in an ideal world

tried 2 read short stories written by women over break. in terms of prose, the husband stitch, a modern retelling of a specific fairy tale that i perhaps won't spoil via a very feminine lens still sticks with me which i think is...good, for a short story?
One of the mothers has a pale yellow ribbon on her finger, and it constantly tangles in her thread. She swears and cries. One day I have to use the sewing shears to pick at the offending threads. I try to be delicate. She shakes her head as I free her from the peony.

– It’s such a bother, isn’t it? she says. I nod.

stone animals
was another one that...spoiler alert, doesn't really tie up in a neat little ending the way you'd like, but the surrealist prose was crazy interesting to read:
Henry went looking for King Spanky. They were going to see the vet: he had the cat cage in the car, but no King Spanky. It was early afternoon, and the rabbits were out on the lawn. Up above, a bird hung, motionless, on a hook of air. Henry craned his head, looking up. It was a big bird, a hawk maybe. It circled, once, twice, again, and then dropped like a stone, towards the rabbits. The rabbits didn’t move. There was something about the way they waited, as if this were all a game. The bird dropped through the air, folded like a knife, and then it jerked, tumbled, fell. The wings loose. The bird smashed into the grass and feathers flew up. The rabbits moved closer, as if investigating.

OH! and what was the name of it...REELING FOR THE EMPIRE! super unideal format to read in, but i think this was my favorite out of what i read over break -- i think i'd describe the basic premise as "japanese woman are tricked into working as silk worms in a factory" (also general warning for body horror w/ this one):
Nobody has ever guessed her own color correctly -- Hoshi predicted hers would be peach and got blue; Nishi thought pink, got hazel. I would have bet my entire five-yen advance that mine would be light gray, like my cat's fur. But then I woke and pushed the swollen webbing of my thumb and a sprig of green came out. On my day zero, in the middle of my terror, I was surprised into a laugh: here was a translucent green I swore I'd never seen anywhere in nature, and yet I knew it was my own on sight.

in other mediums, i read a bunch of junji ito one-offs and OH BOY does army of one hit different in these unprecedented times. honestly if you're going to read anything in this post read this cuz it's truly goofyfloatingonwatermitskinobody.gif.gif. (warning for gore, body horror, general horror here -- this is the guy who wrote the "this is my hole, it's made for me" enigma of amigara fault & is famous for his work in horror manga, so, uh. be aware.)

new semester tomorrow, so anxious!

how do you guys keep going when you're so tired??

boring "do as i say not as i do" allegedly-high-gpa-junior answer:
i feel like i'm at my best w/ staying motivated & avoiding feeling tired in the first place when i'm treating class like a job & budgeting time off accordingly
basically if ur in a full time college load? treat that shit like a full time job (and if ur in a part time load, commit to it like a part time job. [# credit hours * 2] = your hrs/week, give or take 2-5hrs, is my rule of thumb). i try 2 commit to a minimum of 6-8 hours a day 5 days a week, starting from when i get up. my schedule last semester had my first class @ 11am on zoom and while u bet ur ass i rolled out of bed hungover @ 10:55am every single day, after that i (tried) to be working on school stuff until 7pm. "working on school stuff" here is taken to mean watching lectures, going to/from class, actually being @ in-person classes, proper studying -- basically "all the things you would not be doing if you were not enrolled in uni" as opposed to just studystudystudy or w/e. [AND YOU KNOW WHAT, I'M EDITING THIS TO SAY: pick 8 hours that work best for you. if you find that you work best from 12pm-2pm, take a break to play ff14 until 8pm, and then pick up again studying until 2am? CHASE UR BLISS, FAM. just be consistent.] and if ur at a point where ur like "oh well theres nothing left to do"? THAT'S THE DEVIL TALKING. WORK AHEAD. there is ALWAYS something you can be doing, and if you work ahead far enough you can even have wiggle room for those days where you're just "fuck this, i'm binging buzzfeed unsolved all day and no one can stop me."
the catch is that once u hit that 8 hours for the day? clock the fuck out. even if you feel like you didn't do much -- clock. the. fuck. out. R E S T. there's no overtime pay here and nothing will wreck your motivation like not building in time for yourself to fuckin' relax, and if you're genuinely putting in 8 hours of work a day, there's a good chance you're going to keep up just fine. (if you try this and are not keeping up just fine, disregard me, try another strategy BLEASE, and Good Luck Fellow Soldier)
this usually goes out the window during midterm/finals week, and there's a H U G E "YMMV" issue with this strat, but i find that it works rly well for me when i can actually stick to it. im also a v. internally motivated person so take that as u will

tl;dr i always advocate that consistent scheduling over procrastination and panic at the last minute is way better for your mental health and avoiding that tired feeling in the first place LMAO.

also, i don't know what year of college you're in, but the workload of post-covid uni is easily 1.25-1.5x the workload of pre-covid uni and twice as stressful, so if you're ever feeling overwhelmed at any point please know that you are not the only one LMFAO. i kissed my 4.0 goodbye last semester and consider it a small price to pay to be out of that Hellscape Of A Semester

the way i actually respond every time my therapist asks me this question:
