That sounds like a vanity press scam to me. Legitimate publishers don't ask you to foot the bill and it sounds like their business model is based on selling writing coaching.

For reference, the company in question was Dorrance Publishing. They have a bunch of different services, the writing coach was just the one I was interested in.

Yea Dorrance is a vanity publisher. They are predatory in nature, they have no interest in selling books. They make their profit off of writers who don't know better. Maybe the coaching service has some value, but I wouldn't trust a vanity publisher with anything personally.

Nanowrimo is offering master classes and coaching courses this year. I don't know if there is a cost because I didn't really look too deep. It might be worth checking out if you're interested in the coachings.
