[attr="class","boldinghereafter"]Hereafter is a story of decadence, materialism, alcoholic nights, opium filled air, and a vanishing civilization. Set in the late 1920s, Shangrila faces a disappearing emperor, angry spirits, and mounting conflicts that threaten to tear the country into millions of ugly fragments.

Shangrila (桃花源) is an oriental country set in the industrialization era, during the second industrial revolution, where the revolution heralds an unprecedented movement of people and ideas. This is bought on by the rise of western influence after World War 1. The story starts with the disappearance of the Jade Emperor; a man entrusted with the heavenly artifact called "Mandate of Heaven" that is said to be capable of crushing any foe with an overwhelming blessing from the divine.

Before the industrial revolution occurs, Ayakashi (spirits) live peacefully alongside humans, both worshiped and respected. Temples were built in some of their names, and they take care of nature, the climate, and ensure that food and water are plentiful for all. The more respected an Ayakashi is, the more influence they have over human affairs. This brings about the rise of Shamans; groups of intellects that study the earth, sea, and sky to weave magic with intelligence, forming contracts with Ayakashis as companions and friends, but never lovers.

Each Shaman has an artifact called a Relic that they carry with them at all times, a small token that represents the line of study they decide to pursue when they turn 18 years old. The Relic are vital for two reasons; to cleanse evil, and to form contracts with Ayakashis that cannot be broken unless due to special, dire circumstances. Shamans often reside in temples, and they are scholars, counselors, and respected individuals that stay by the side of the Jade Emperor- at least, until he vanished without a trace.

When he vanished, the Shamans and Ayakashis are thrown in a disarray by a military coup from the Imperial Army, led by a commander known for his cutting words and swift actions. The Imperial Army took over the country, destroying temples ruthlessly, running a smear campaign against Shamans as charlatans, and Ayakashis as figments of imagination. Any Ayakashi found will be seized and murdered ruthlessly, while Shamans are placed under surveillance, with the remaining temples closely guarded. With that, the people's trust in the existence of Ayakashi subsequently faded, diminishing Ayakashis' influence and power to something that cannot really touch the human world. Ayakashis are fading- their existence unknown, and they are forced to live as humans, with humans, disguised as humans with what is left of their powers.

That phenomenon led to the creation of Mononokes; corrupted Ayakashi that have become too intertwined with human affairs, and hence filled with anger and resentment. The Mononokes' powers ballooned when corrupted- turning them into harmful, angered curses that seek to spread malice and despair. Left with no choice, the Imperial Army accused Shamans of spreading despair, while Shamans and Ayakashis strive to work together and cleanse the Mononokes permanently- by seeking the Truth (why the Mononoke was created), Form (the real appearance of the Mononoke), and the Regret (the Mononoke's final desire).

While the conflicts rage on beneath the thinly veiled civilization, the human world isn't so simple. Opium has finally fell into the hands of the inhabitants of Shangrila, leading to rising drug trades, criminal activity, all laced together in the age of partying and decadence- with complete and utter disregard for what the future holds. At the same time, the Prohibition Era is here; the ban of alcohol only further increase bootlegging and consumption of dangerous alcohols. Shangrila never sleeps- and its facade of peace is breaking apart at the edges.

"And they live happily ever after" is a typical, mundane ending to every story. Shangrila gives you your once upon a time - submerge yourself in the story and find a Hereafter that you won't ever regret.

[attr="class","boldinghereafter"]Technicalities
Please feel free to indicate interest if you want to participate in such a site so that we'll know to make it! Hereafter has been a passion project for months now, and I'm happy to announce that we finally have a substantial plot, aesthetic, and skin! We are currently working on other specifics, but here are some things to take note of upon indicating your interest.

One- Ayakashis are similar to yokai, but somewhat different due to their ability to appear as humans or human like. That is to say, while it's possible for an Ayakashi to take on an animal form, they can, and will take on human forms as well.

Two- Ayakashis are spirits and folklore creatures/mythical beings from purely oriental lore. Meaning that applications such as Wendigo will not be accepted, because they are not oriental. However, variations of the Hu Li Jing ( fox spirit ), such as the Japanese Kitsune and the Korean Gumiho are allowed, as long as the member follows and understands the details that differs the three.

Three- We strongly discourage the fetishization of any folklore creatures, and thus, creatures as as the succubus, incubus, and any variations will be strictly reviewed and possibly not allowed. This is to prevent weird variations of furry kink and any violation of the strict no nsfw rule.

Four- We currently have limited slots for players that wants to play Shamans, so do indicate your interest down below if you want to, and we'll give you a slot!

Five- Thank you for reading this far ahead, and have a nice day.

Thank you for your interest!

The Imperial army have pocket pistols and . 38 caliber pistols that they are only allowed to fire if they have the authorization to do so! No civilians will have such weapons, though its possible if civilians obtain pocket pistols illegally since the black market is thriving. And no, they do not have relics. Relics are exclusively carried by Shamans and used to forge contracts between Shamans and Ayakashis as well.

However, just to be clear, as the Ayakashi and their powers have minimal effect on humans, they need Shamans to channel their powers to heavily impact human society. That said, an Ayakashi cannot directly harm a human, and likewise, a pocket pistol cannot hurt an Ayakashi too much; just a slight bruising. Mononokes are another story; as they are more emotional, corrupted, and intertwined with human affairs, they can hurt the same way they can be hurt by the imperial army. Furthermore, the soldiers that have a higher rank also carries more sophisticated weaponry than a normal foot soldier, and these are not accessible to the public, hence making these two groups almost eventually matched in terms of power.

FACECLAIM RESERVES WHENNNNN

also: can we play mononoke?

Face claim reserves go up the moment the site is live! However, I'll keep the faceclaim you want in mind and take note!

Since Mononokes are basically corrupted Ayakashi, yes, but only if they have beginnings as Ayakashi. Meaning, it's necessary for you to start out as an Ayakashi and detail their journey (angst basically) to becoming corrupted preferably on the site! However, just a gentle reminder; since Mononokes technically are stronger, the staff will also be tuning the Mononokes' abilities on a case by case basis instead of a vague system.

Furthermore, as Mononokes are supposed to be cleansed eventually, they are the only characters on site that are death enabled. We accept that some characters will die on this journey, but majority of Mononokes will have to die, with only a few exceptions being cleansed of their sins.

Another thing to take note; to fully use their powers, Mononokes possess humans (not shamans) to do so. Alternatively, if you want to play the possessed humans as a dual personality : mononoke + human, you can! But keep in mind that only the human has a good chance of staying alive.
