i used to be p anti-stats during the first few years ive spent joining site rp proper (2018-2021) but ive honestly found over time that i really, really, really love systems and tabletop mechanics and honestly consider it a pretty solid way to "powerbalance" people, introduce new and fun outcomes, as well as guide rp, so my vote tends to lean toward hard stats these days. soft stats can be fine if a system knows how to properly integrate it, but i do echo what safi said: often, going statless is better than soft stats when a system isn't able to really account for the variables that make tabletop really Work(TM)

yes. understanding that stats/systems/table top mechanics creates a balanced, great, and unique atmosphere without sacrificing character desires and needs is true enlightenment.

i, too, prefer soft stats or hard stats. statless is fun and has its uses for storytelling overall, but often when you throw statless in sites w/ magic/powers and etc it creates scenarios of uncertainty.

welcome 2 the math rp community.

Hi, it's me, I love stats.

The feeling of a silky-smooth system well-integrated into the site skin; the on-demand transparency of what every character can do; the challenge of creativity within equal opportunity bounds; the unpredictable and often meme-worthy moments that arise from hard work and luck.

When I'm not too involved in RP, as I have been for a while now, statless is fine. But it feels like the mediocre option where everyone plays nice and everything is planned and I never feel particularly surprised by an outcome. All my best memories are from roleplays where betrayal is possible, failure sits in the back of your mind and your actions change to be accordingly risk-calculating, combat can occur with very real stakes, and results are a truth that you have to adapt around rather than try to block from ever happening.

But if I'm not too invested, then it's fine if someone pulls something out of left field that was not mentioned whatsoever in their statless power app. As they say, 'yolo'.

im usually a stats hater but after examining my feelings i think the problem is that stats require way more testing than most admins think they do (and like i get it you don't want to be doing 50 years of QA testing and no rp)

but a clunky system with no apparent narrative benefit just makes it feel like i'm doing pointless math work. i feel like i would hate it less if there were fully automated tracking/math systems

i'm not a big fan of forum-specific stat systems just b/c i don't like imbalanced games.

i don't like putting time and effort into a RP character only to find out the system balanced them around has rendered them functionally useless.

i also don't like "simple" stat systems designed to pigeonhole characters into specific playstyles and not really allow for much build variance or flexibility. If there's a clear meta, people are gonna play for it in an RP, and the more imbalanced the system, the clearer that Meta is.

i am ok with people using playtested systems on their forums. and i'm also more ok with non-D&D systems, mostly because I do not want to go anywhere near Faerun. hate Faerun. Might play in Krynn, but you will catch me dead before joining a Baldur's Gate RP.

Also honestly I think going self-hosted is better for stat RP just because MyBB is more customizable than Jcink, if you want an integrated-into-the-forum stat system. I've considered it, but hosting costs and learning all that PHP blugh.
