right, OK, we can easily argue that they are both types of "theft" but one is still significantly more grievous than the other. the difference between intentionally training an AI to crank out specific "brands" of images found on the dataset vs just editing something someone already made is that pulling PS open still involves human labor (some level of graphic design). that's like stealing someone's nice cake + refrosting it. AI is stealing the entire recipe book people put decades of love + work into developing and opening a bakery.

never mind artists literally drawing fanart of IPs they don't own and reselling it whether or not the company allows it.

these metrics are not equal.

obvsly this debate resides in an ambiguous limbo. whether people want to use AI for their face claims is entirely up to them. it doesn't stop me from writing with them; i've threaded with ppl who used manga caps w/ the SPEECH BUBBLE still on so idgaf. in the rp world what matters to me is whether or not the site creator's rules and metrics are respected.

So far no one has addressed the glaring fact that if you’re going to pay people, pay the right people.

almost every popular AI bots is company-owned. What we (general we) plug in as a prompt is nothing short than theft disguised as art direction.

I think a lot of this conversation got conflated and devolved from the original point of argument: crediting artists. In this Wild West digital age it’s the least we can do, and I’ll be making sure to properly credit what is due.

Quick addendum: it's a fine line in the creative world but... emulating/inspired by =/= theft. Majority of artists do allow pfp use, which includes hovers and whatnot, therefore editing is allowed. Majority of artists do NOT allow their art to be used for AI simulators, which is why we see artists taking down their art from public sites. Art credits DOES make things better, because it tells me where you got your art from whether that is from an artist or idk Midjourney. Like, imagine passing in a research paper to your professor without citing your bibliography or footnotes, haha. That's crazy.

Another (related) confession: I think ppl who use AI art shouldn't get fc claims. Because at that point the art doesn't look like idk Nami from One Piece, but an entirely different character. Might as well just credit it as Original from Original Series. Which imo is fine.
Not giving your sources their due credit warrants an hbomberguy 2 hour video rant

usually i look to korean and/or chinese illustrations on weibo/lofter first as i conceptualize a very loose character idea. popular or niche, it doesn't matter. for me the claim must fit the character's general vibe.

my subjective opinion on mihoyo claims: most designs aren't to my tastes. it's either the ubiquitous baby face that turns me away or the very common chinese-feudal-flowy-rimmed-with-metal-dress wardrobe which... makes them perfect for fantasy rp ngl, but then i'd have to sift through all the AI-generated art to find the one artist whose style is closest to what is ideal.

otherwise.... bring back the fgo era pls

short answer: u are what u consume

better answer: as someone who actively dabbles in both communities, it really depends on the rpg in question. face claims are largely not my concern - i prioritize an interesting concept/story first and foremost, and if the hooks sound gucci only then do i begin to hunt for a face claim.

if i want to write camp, comedy, etc, my imagination cannot exaggerate toon force (cartoon logic) without animated face claims. other times i'm looking for something a bit more esoteric / high concept, and usually i can only find that in the rlrp sphere.
 
rp politics does also influence my rp decisions but idk, animanga rpc seems to be providing better setting ideas than rlrp these days. southern gothic is not my scene ok O_o

i barely remember what i said last week let alone last year but lets try this again

- gonna be selfish with #1 but i'd like to start either married or engaged for once. the couple in question don't even need to get along. basically sites don't last long enough for slow burns and i'd rather write the marriageable problems than the 30 year old bronte spinster.

- return to my camp roots aka gags and reels, the unique quirks that define characters like claudia from interview w the vampire, the daisy buchanans or the harley quinns of the world. + commit to their convictions also, whether they be diabolical or downright pathetic.

- recognize my limits and set a soft cap on threads.

- reply faster lol
