Hmm, I need to figure out how to incentivize my brain to write. Mostly because I really want to finish this character so he can cease randomly giving application muse splurts when I am in the middle of doing something else... He is having way too much fun calling shots.

I have stunned myself with how much I wrote for abilities for one character. However, at the same time, I am very happy about it. How the abilities work really satisfied me and makes me happy. I just love adding little intricacies or flourishes. It gives me a ton of satisfaction.

OPENING DAY

prepared to dance in the dark?

After some discussion, the official opening day of UMBRA will be April 27, 2024. I have a few more things to work on, however, the date should work perfectly fine! On the opening day, I will post here with the ad and everyone will be allowed on site. Given we are opening soon, I will give some of the site features that are confirmed.

[break][break]

Site's Features [break]
- We have a variety of canon positions that will be available for members. Some positions are more powerful than others, but even after first access people grabbing some positions, we still have a lot available!

[break][break]

- Activity rulings are more lax with one post per 5 characters every 2 months for activity checks. Canon characters are an exception and will require a post every two months.

[break][break]

- While we could not complete the goal of free-for-all species, we have a broad variety of available species and have a flexible power system for people.

[break][break]

- The character's User Profile acts as the application for convenience. We also have an auto-tracker to make life easier for joining members! No more hassling yourself with making one.

[break][break]

- There is a light and dark mode available on the site along with custom posting templates! These templates came with the site and will change between light and dark accordingly.

Both the above is where my brain goes. I try to remember to put trigger warnings on my histories that are more sketch and may trigger someone. So I thought extending it to a general “This character may trigger x.” Would maybe be a nice addition to give people an idea of whether or not they should interact or to open the door to conversation about potentially censoring if interaction is required for plotting due to wanted as groups existing.

Not to be 'that guy', but about the Associated Triggers... Is this like.. What triggers the character or what triggers the rper? I'm sure it says somewhere but my brain is just not finding it lol.

What I mean by it is triggers associated with the character. I will use the character I mentioned above as an example. He does have some theming around depression and dark thoughts (these persist with being a balancer for his empathic abilities with worsening his depression). So he is heavily associated with what I would consider a common trigger in role-play. So having a place to say “Hey, this character is heavily associated with these heavy topics.” would probably be a good idea given I communicate this with people ahead of time.

So I guess the proper word is a discretion? Like what you would at the beginning of video games or shows that feature heavy topics.

Sometimes I have seriously considered adding an ‘Associated Triggers’ section to the applications of characters whose themes, histories, etc revolve around heavy topics. I just feel it may help communicate for people who need it if a character is worth interacting with or so we can work together to figure something out so they can avoid the trigger if the thread is considered a ‘need’ for plot development purposes.
i have this built in my skin as “character notes” like cw for interaction, which i think is more relevant than individual cw.

I played a manipulative, gaslighting, endeavor-coded guy and halfway through the thread being a narcissistic douche to his daughter, someone following the family drama storyline mentioned conversationally how trigger he was and me and my rp partner were like holy shit yeah this guy needs a trigger warning. It seemed obvious but ooc chat have been generally like, laughing at how shitty the whole thing is. But when you’re reading ir or maybe even interacting with it, it can get crawl up to you. Now im proud of that bc that means i really played a terrible character well but also did feel very guilty not realizing that sooner.

So yeha i do believe there should be like that stuff in tumblr abt must reads before interactinf w/tge character.

Ooooh, I have not thought of it to this specification. The character I am thinking of, for the sake of keeping things more safe with language, has severe depression and thoughts associated with that. So it is a very heavy topic and since his ability theming is based around The Crooked Man poem, I have actually described him as a “walking trigger”. So he primarily makes me think about adding stuff like that since it is so prominent on account of his dark themings and inner workings. So overall, I really wanted to consider adding it since sometimes characters have those traits.

Though I can definitely get the weird mix of guilt and pride. If it helps, I can see how oversights happen easily; especially if you don’t have or have a lot amount of triggers. But I am glad they came to you politely. I love seeing that since there is a point of helping others learn from actions so they can take action to avoid it in the future.

Tbh, I'm super glad I found out about roleplaying. Collaborating with other writers to create memorable and fun plots is such a good feeling. <3

Gotta say, I am glad to hear! New role-players are a rare commodity, so it is great seeing some come into the fray. <3 I hope you keep enjoying it and have a lot of fun!

I feel this game is buying my love. I have been naming cats after character and their ships and one of these ships involves a ghost character. Game shows me an adorable ghost cat to name the ship after! Then just now-

Me: Man wish I could adopt all the cats…
Game: Ha, about that. Since you finished the story, YOU CAN!
Me: :D GAME I LOVE YOU!

For anyone wondering, the game is Cat Cafe Manager.

I tend to have a lot of energy for plots, ideas, threads, and such, but then that little voice in my head tells me to rein it in or sit on my hands. Sometimes I'm afraid I have too much gusto that it can be overwhelming for an rp partner, especially if I'm being speedy about replies or wanting to jump right into something because I'm super excited and muse filled. Or that voice starts trying to send doubts my way :')

Me: Let's goooo!!

I know this feeling! Sometimes I go crazy on ideas and accidentally spam people cause I am just really hyper about it. Lol

Just wanted to clarify how I treat characters as people. Even if they do not have agency outside of forum, to me, they have agency in any thread they are in. Therefore, if a character has a massive overarching goal for example, I probably won't turn around and say "No character, you cannot do that cause I or X wants Y." But as said, I am a bit biased since I find the improvising and surprises fun on all fronts. Even with wanted ads. I love when people come up to me and go "Hey... So based on this history point, I wanted to do a resentment thing, is that okay?" Love that, love when people surprise me cause for me I want to inspire someone to create a character from a wanted they would wish to play elsewhere. ^-^ It's beautiful to me in a way, hence my flexibility with things.

I think a better solution to the above is clear communication as Feral is mentioning. There is a line of improvising in role-play since, similar to people, characters are complicated. They have layers and I am not sure about anyone else, but those layers are where the intrigue is for me. As long as someone communicates to me something may need changing because X character's feelings, motives, recent happenings, mood, etc, then yeah, change the plot.

Call me old-fashioned if you want, but characters do have opinions, thoughts, moods, motives, feelings, happenings, etc and that is apart of what gives role-play an intriguing complexity. There is a lack of a script because sometimes I can sit there and tell someone "You know... I don't know how Y character will respond, so we can see what happens." It is part of the fun and is why I try to be upfront to begin with the fact I will not be forcing my characters to do anything. As I have said before, I will flex a situation, not a character. If I can make you a situation to give you what you like, sure. If I can't, I will communicate that to you.

So to put it simply, I view my characters as people. They are not tools, playtoys, dress-up dolls, etc. They are people who I have created to write a story and at least to me as a writer, a forcing of character is not fun. It would, if anything for myself, beg the question of why bother with character variety if I'm going to just mould them to do whatever I or another person wants? Overall, that is how I see it. Thus, I think communicating or situation bending would be a good solution over character bending every time.
