i feel like a lot of society's wrath towards nlogs and "pick-me girls" is just how toxic conventionally feminine women have found a feminist way to harass gnc women and trans people.

i think it's really telling that we have less compassion for the teenage girl that goes "i'm not like the other girls" than the conventionally feminine cis women that have been telling her that her entire life in a much more cruel manner.

very tired of feminism that doesn't acknowledge that femininity in its convention is just as much a tool of the patriarchy as masculinity, and that's part of why woc are denied it so often. femininity can be toxic. there are unspoken gender expectations thrust upon girls and those seen as girls and you are punished for not conforming to them. i'm tired of how little sympathy we have for people who are victims of this policing.
Honestly, I think a lot of the vitriol comes from people who were that 'girl' when they were younger, and are trying to distance themselves from it, because they've found a way to conform to society's expectation of femininity. As a young, awkwardly androgynous preteen/teenage girl (really trying to look more masculine, but still stuck in the 'looks like a ten year old boy' sort of way), you get a lot of people telling you that it's something they'll grow out of, or a phase that they had, too, and to treat any deviation from the norm like it's something you'll eventually feel as embarrassed and ashamed of as they did. It's a little sad. They were probably told the same thing growing up, too.

All to say, I really agree. (& also just think that 'nlogs' & 'pick-mes' aren't to be blamed for a society that alienates women [& gnc people in genera!l] for not fitting into traditional gender expectations or beauty standards. sometimes you have to think on a larger level-- most likely, that 14 year old on twitter is convinced that not wearing makeup or following a 10-step skincare routine makes her so different because makeup & beauty companies are marketing [shamelessly & kinda evilly, but that's not the point] to her demographic like crazy, and it's suddenly all over her instagram/tiktok/etc feed, pressuring her to feel like the odd one out if she doesn't spend $50 on a new eyeshadow palette— not because she hates every other woman on planet earth. it's just easier to take shots at people who already feel vulnerable and alone than at, like, sephora.)

the forum scene isn’t dead just because you don’t like any of the options available.

every time i see this sentence I think it’s dumb.
tbh there are higher standards for forums these days and that's led to fewer forums being opened. but considering how back in the "good old days," most forums usually died in a month, i don't really see an issue with that.

what do you want to know? my height, hobbies, quirks, the color of my underwear?
okay but real talk, isn't the fact that we have quarterly Discourse (tm) about "the forum rpc is dead" "no it's not" probably means that the overall scene might not be healthy? because idk about y'all but that feels like a far more productive topic to be discussed and reflected on (and maybe improved a little) than rehashing the same old arguments about whether the rpc is dead or not-

Idk, I feel like it's also not news that the rp scene isn't necessarily healthy and there's been lots of debate as to why and some of it can't ultimately be fixed either. Anything from cliques, aesthetic requirements getting higher and higher, and fc possessiveness are all things that were brought up before to name a few.

Ultimately those conversations never solved or went anywhere productive either.

It's not a new topic and it's also just another one that would be getting rehashed.

At this point I think you would be hard-pressed to find a topic that hasn't been debated or complained about so with the logic given nobody should talk about anything because it's already been covered.

Personally I laugh when I see "the rpc is dead" when like several sites advertised in the past few weeks - but sure, it's dead and "unhealthy".

I'm sorry to be blunt, but people want different things out of an rp site. For example I help staff multiple rp sites and some just want a chill thing and some want a distinctly active and popping forum. Some want plot, some want connected sub plots, some people want to write without being judged. There are fewer sites because they are more work, people want different things, and as an older community we're aware of what we want and don't want to expend energy on other things. We don't have as much, therefore sometimes we can't water the grass in the site and the admin thinks that they are at fault because communication. There's plenty of reasons about the rp but the constant nitpicking about how the community acts doesn't help us come together. If you think it's "unhealthy" and I think it's "healthy" or you think it's "dead" and I think it's "alive" - it's all about the perspective.

I understand the person saying it's dead to mean "there's no rps I like, so that mean it must be dead". However Feral has a huge point here - that there's so much demanded of internet hobbies now that it's hard to sometimes just spin something up like a discord. I'm working on like seven projects from scratch, including a huge set of templates for both proboards and jcink to give back to the community. It's a lot of work, but I do think putting effort in to actually help the community grow besides sites as much as possible can work to grow a more realistic and "healthy" view of what is supposed to be a simple internet hobby.

all yous general btw.
