A site isn't just the physical site though. It's the community that lives in it. A site and its community have control over each other and it is limited sometimes but staffing is about nurturing and pruning the community too. And based on the comments in this thread it seems like a large amount of the time someone leaves is because they don't connect with that community. And that is extremely valuable information for anyone who plans to run a site, so I think the thread is serving its purpose.

So long as people try to be respectful here I think it is worthwhile for them to be honest and worthwhile for anyone who had been in a position to do something about it to contemplate, did I enable this? What could I have done better?

tl;dr it may not be nice but as long as it's not treated as an absolute and instead as people's opinions, it is valid.
Agreed, though there's a difference between criticism and complaining. One's just venting and vaguely referring to past sites, while the other can be utilized to improve and better one's community and site. Like I said earlier, I assume offering valuable input was the point of the thread and there are points in it which are valid and even elaborated on.

"Don't keep your systems vague / Don't overhaul your site 20 times over / Be more mindful of your members / Lost interest / people did not know how to communicate with each other / Stats and I just don't mesh / They talked more and roleplayed less." are a few I recall. But then there's some posts which go, " This was toxic / That was cliquey." and leave it at that without elaborating on the issue or how they believe it could be fixed. To just say they did not connect with the community does not offer insight on what could be improved.

It's a subjective matter in the end and does not help anyone without the whole story. Sometimes these matters persist behind the scenes and leave the staff confused when it blows up. You can only control your members and their behavior so much before one, you turn into an overbearing admin or two, you drain yourself by playing therapist and babysitter. Feel free to respond but I'll leave it at this though. I rather not debate further.

honestly, i think the thread was originally made with good intentions (exactly for the purpose you stated, as a way for people to see why people tend to leave sites so they can try to avoid the same mistakes on their own), but it's.... very easy to fall into vague-posting in it (since it's very easy to use it to vent about a specific bad experience rather than a general trend), which is.... obviously not great, since there's a decent amount of times when it's fairly easy to identify a person / site (which is a problem even in bigger resource communities but again, you're very right in that the animanga community being so small really makes it a lot easier to trace that vague-posting back).

which isn't to say that i don't think there's not a problem with people saying a site is toxic when it really isn't (or, conversely, that there isn't a toxic element that vibes in animanga and just is), since yeah that's a thing, but. more the thread was one where it was starting off with the premise of "with great power comes great responsibility" and that's understandably not always a risk you want to take with threads like that.

That is understandable. It's easy for threads to get derailed and that certainly isn't OP's fault. The opinions people have stated is also valid and there are indeed toxic or unsavory people in the community.

However, if **all** of these people are indeed toxic, then they also lack self-awareness and will remain clueless about their actions even when vaguely called out through these posts. These sort of posts on a resource site (where people can identify names and sites) affects the admins who ran the site more than the cliques they're talking about.

To say the entire RP experience or site was toxic based on a few members is more likely to hurt the confidence of someone who took the risk to create a site for your entertainment, rather than the rotten few who ruined the experience for some. They're accomplishing nothing positive or bettering the community by doing this. Simply put, it just ain't nice, man.

I assumed the "Why I left" thread was supposed to be constructive; something to take suggestions from and better your sites with. All I see now is people equating their dissatisfaction with a site or community to it being toxic. By that logic, every site you don't mesh with is automatically toxic or cliquey. And that's most of the animanga community when you realize we're a small community and overlap a lot.

Remember, someone put love and effort into making a site. Don't bash someone's baby — someone's effort — when you write on it for free.

I suppose a question is; how minimalistic can apps get while also still holding a "major" canon position?

So our applications are divided into four parts; the first two parts require mandatory information which consists fields like name, age, monikers, occupation, residency and then bits like training, abilities and inventory. The next two parts are freefrom where you can either write paragraphs or pointers that can be expanded on as you play your character, or use our site's available codes (or your own codes) to toss in a slider for personality or even a timeline. A canon character may require some backstory in their app for their families or factions to go off of. This can be bare at first but can be elaborated on later as a faction expands.

In addition, are there any expectations hoisted upon the people in - what we'll call them - weighted roles? In many sites I've seen, people will snap up a position for the inherent power or maneuverability, and then squat there, doing their bare minimum of activity.

Yes! We have a few rules and terms when playing major canons. This is an extract from our canon page:

Canons are characters necessary to help move stories and subplots on AWF. Playing a canon does not mean the story revolves around them, but rather, have more responsibilities, with every action and reaction possibility impacting the story. Before playing a canon, please keep these points in mind:

01.Canons who are part of factions or families are expected to communicate and discuss the lore set by the players of pre-existing canons. This means that if you wish to play the Castellane Heir Apparent and most positions have been taken, you are expected to discuss with the players of House Castellane to ensure the background and lore match.

02.Canons are expected to RP or plot with as many people as they can (within their limits) as they do help the plot progress. Of course, please do not overburden yourself. Being active is all we ask for.

03.Unlike regular characters, canons are required to submit two posts for the monthly activity check.

Additionally, each player can only play one major canon but can play as many minor canons as they can handle.

s We Fall is a Dystopian Fantasy Roleplay in the making and we'd love to gauge interest for it. As it stands, we're quickly making progress and will be open for beta testing soon, as we're looking for feedback to help us craft a better experience for everyone. AWF will be an Original, Jcink Premium roleplay which borrows elements from games and series such as God Eater, Code Vein and Shadowrun. However, knowledge of these series is absolutely not necessary.

Below is some information concerning the site premise,factions and situation. If you're interested, feel free to post below or PM me and I will send you a link to our site and discord when we're open for testing. Otherwise, feel free to ask away if you have questions.

[attr="class","awf-minitit"]PREMISE
Dubbed Day Zero, 14th March 2080 was the day the world changed. Noxious vapors inundated the earth and creatures of myths and legends rose from the ashes. Humanity was forced to bound together and adapt to change. They built strongholds and fortresses and learned to control the newfound mana in the air.

Our story takes place in Imperium City, the first and the largest stronghold in the world. People from all walks have come together in order to fight what threatens humanity. Sixty years have passed since then and this unfamiliar world continues to evolve at an alarming pace. Will you learn to adapt? Or will you fall like so many before?

[attr="class","awf-minitit"]THE WORLD
The world of Absolia is set in the year 2140, long after normal life ceased due to the events of Day Zero. What happened on that day continues to baffle scientists and researchers. Regardless, what remains of humanity have come together in a bid to adapt and survive in this new world. Society has re-structured — not for fairness, nor to the satisfaction of all — but out of necessity.

Which, alas, is subjective.

[attr="class","awf-minitit"]FEATURES
- DYSTOPIAN FANTASY
- ORIGINAL WORLD AND LORE
- JCINK PREMIUM
- ANIMANGA/ANIMATED FACECLAIMS
- A FREEFORM APP TO WRITE AS MUCH OR AS LITTLE AS YOU DESIRE
- MAJOR AND MINOR CANON ROLES
- NO WORD COUNT
- EMERGENCE OF MAGIC
- THEMATIC MAGIC

[attr="class","awf-minitit"]AFTERWORD
With the emergence of magic, myths and new threats, our story focuses on how Imperium City has handled this and restructured itself entirely. The city has been divided into the inner ring, Cyphus — where the elite, wealthy and power-bound reside — and Stelaris — where refugees deemed incapable of aiding humanity's fight against the threats of the new world are neglected. With themes surrounding inequality, exploring the outside world, post-apocalyptic settings, etc and factions such as the council, ministry and the triads, there are plenty of subplots to be made and explored.

We intend on making As We Fall a narrative-based roleplay which the player can affect with their choices and actions. Of course, site-plot participation is absolutely not mandatory and players are free to explore smaller and close-knit stories as well.
