What separates dark and edgy from dark and mature? Why does that line even exist? Can something be dark, edgy, and mature? Does it matter? Am I asking too many questions at 12 in the morning? Maybe. Maybe.
Edgy elements are always dark but dark elements aren't always edgy.
The difference here is necessity. Necessity dictates tone. If something is fittingly dark it adds depth and maturity but if it's needlessly dark, or dark for thematically inappropriate reasons it just comes off as trying too hard. In my mind you can have something be dark when it's handled with respect. There are very tough topics, mature topics, and etc. that are just sadly a part of life, and you add it to give some depth to your characters, it's usually in a moderate amount as well.
It comes down to intention and how its utilized. When something is used as a plot point, used to progress a story and treated as a serious matter that is tackled realistically, then usually that is just dark/mature aspect of a character. Especially in settings with some nitty gritty like a war, dystopia, etc.
Edgy is when the point of adding a plotpoint or aspect that is mature/dark/serious in nature is just used to invoke a response from others, and usually it is accompanied by just being done in overabundance. Edgy is always looking for the next shock factor or gross-out factor. The point is to make as many jaws drop in as little time as possible. They tend to go from scene to scene and want things to get so chaotic that you feel emotionally tired by the end of it.
