sometimes i feel like it's so hard to take want ads where there's already so much written up about the existing character already, even though there are some people i see with really fun and interesting want ads that I'd love to plot/rp with... wails...

want ads that you can slot existing characters into, my beloved,

The first thing I do when I visit a new site is to look for the light mode option.

The second thing is, I look at want ads and see if there's anything I'd like to take. Frequently want ads are a few weeks/months old, and those that are there often have a very specific character they're looking for, so it's often more difficult to take one than I'd like. I've taken a few want ads and I want to continue doing so, but it's such a turnoff when too many details (including FC and stuff) are already given.

I'd be happy to write my character in the role you need, but I'm not really interested in writing someone else's character.

Since it is being mentioned, I appreciate people who take wanted ads so much. I don’t know if anyone else has this issue, but I rarely can since my brain gets very specific ideas. These ideas tend to be specific enough that I am never sure if they will fit, so I don’t tend to take them since I am also usually too nervous to ask about it. Thus people who take wanted ads to me deserve high praise.

by the time i was old enough to hit the 18+ requirements on rp sites they started raising it to 21+ and 25+ . what are they going to raise it to when im 25. 30??

I mean, it's one thing to age-gate one's site to 18+, and maybe raise the bar a little higher for personal comfort reasons, but I swear that sometimes, the hobby of forum RPing seems to have become like that Twitter meme about how "I think kids should be banned from the Internet altogether, because the fact that I'm at risk from hearing a 14-year old's opinion on something is a violation of my human rights."
honestly as someone young enough to be regularly age-gated and someone who was regularly age-gated from communities (even if not explicitly, there are a lot of rpers who won't write with/will publicly vocalize not being comfortable writing with people of a younger age) i don't mind people setting boundaries/having an age preference for their hobby but it seems obvious to me why forum rp doesn't get a lot of new blood if there's not really a whole lot of places for younger rpers to start out

i wish this hobby had more slower sites or that they were advertised more.

most places i've tried to touch back in seem relatively fast pace overall in terms of what the people i've been around like on average. even the speed that events go by. it all makes it hard to get back into the hobby. esp with rl obligations. since i found posting once a week or later tends to cause most people to question activity or lose interest.

wish there was an easier solution. i miss it.

we are of the same thinking! i'm still not used to the thought process that if you're not on and replying every day, a site is inactive/dying and interest is gone. ppl have real lives, and i am all for replying when we can. once a week is reasonable imo, given individual circumstances. i've certainly waited longer for my partners with no issue, and will continue to, 'cause they're worth it and i'm invested in our collaborative effort.

There's hope beyond this lone abyss.
Slower-paced RP sites are definitely around, it just takes some looking for them, speaking as someone who tends to linger on one or two sites for long-term. It’s worth combing through β€œold” directory posts and looking at sites, plenty of these sites don’t get as actively advertised because the staff there are busy etc.

This also goes for slow-burn roleplayers and the like, I find that I'm more likely to find them on older and more slow-paced sites sometimes, instead of brand new ones

Another way I’ve used to find people who post at a similar pace, or won’t rush you, is to post RP partner searches/site wanted ads on directory sites. I don’t think there’s actually an extreme lack of patient people etc. but because they tend to be busier, they are harder to find/quieter in general

On the other hand, on sites that are kinda omni-RP communities that mainly focus on 1x1 RP, I find that β€œslow” posters are more common, so when I was lacking for people to write with at first, I looked there

Because yeah, I really cannot keep up with fast-paced sites much anymore...I don’t think I ever actually did, even back in the old days. I’ve tried to compromise and join sites that had tighter activity requirements or, while didn’t have those activity requirements, had the overall energy of being faster-paced, and it just didn’t work out for me. It’s very possible to find people and places with similar values and thinking, though, even if it takes a while or some trial-and-error. It isn't a bad thing to try out new places and end up figuring they're not for you. There's so many layers here...forums with settings I'd want to write + with a community I fit in with + with a pace I can keep up with and so on, but I've had success without compromising too much on any of that

highly responsive to prayers
i'm starting to realize a big issue i have with forum rp is the lack of risk/surprise/drama. it's like...to me, sites just feel so stagnant before they die and nothing "big" ever really happens. no losses, no wins, no major plot changes outside of the interpersonal, just a lot of...blah

like maybe stats, numbers, whatever etc. etc. are a good thing as they do make rp less predictable
