Re user groups bc I'm lazy: CENSUS was at the back of my mind. I could argue against census?? I associate a site having a census as a site trying to encourage an "even cast," and I don't think casts need to be even unless, again, it's faction-based and the factions are supposed to have equal plot significance.

Custom user groups sounds like Work Plus, but you do get a variety...

Btw I think user groups by personality is adorable, I just personally wouldn't do it bc... I'm lazy. That's my defining personality trait lol

This is a kind of open, brainstorming question, but what are user groups for on sites that don't have character factions? It seems like extra work to separate characters by fantasy races or affinity gimmicks when you can fill that into a profile.

Madoka Magica spoiler site where familiars are free to RP but witches proper are site events. Thinking low stats aside from a soul gem clarity system, plus a couple factions to propel infighting.

The plot would be kicked off by a huge explosion of witches and a second wave of contracted magical girls getting pulled into the politics behind it.

ive had such a hard time picking between sites to join that my interest has imploded into existential insanity. i have gone from asking "is it worth reading this much fan lore" to "what is my purpose"

at first i was kind of squinting at this (since my fear would be people throwing fits because their faves don't fit into the ecosystem), but then i realized it might be kind of neat to do something where like... the on-site pokedex expands based on either 1) what starters characters pick (aka pikachu aren't available on the site until someone is approved with one as their starter) or 2) what the members actually say they want (like if 3 members say they want a shinx so the staff add shinx to the mod list).

OooooH 'cause as soon as I posted I started thinking about starter exclusivity, characters being able to bring Pokemon from other regions, and maybe members could buy that opportunity with site currency. I really like the evolving Pokedex idea... Like really like it... Maybe there could be wanted ads for Pokemon and with enough "__" they can be 'imported' or 'artificially cloned.'

Now I'm thinking of a man-made region/research colony as a setting and maybe there'd be a city-building aspect in there.

But yeah, the main difficulty is knowing what Pokemon to keep. Vulpix, Pikachu, and Eevee wouldn't be too hard to fit in, but the furry ones would fuck me up, like Lucario and even Machoke, they're like people, man. But that's the fun of an evolving Pokedex, again, because people can just work towards the cool 'mons.

I've posted about Pokemon here before but specifically: imagine a Pokemon site with a limited Pokedex, where all of the Pokemon fit into a closed ecosystem. Kinda like SwSh. Regardless of "genre," is that too limiting?

On the flip side, if they're making a transphobic character not because of those meta reasons...

Not to mini-mod, but I'm not sure how you came to this conclusion, since, as a whole, this is an advice thread about being respectful for meta reasons. (And since this was moved to Advice lol)

I have seen some (not all; not many) trans people tentatively accept the "trap" archetype, or at least define it as separate from "being trans," and could totally see a person labeling themselves as one whether in some act of reclamation or even for negative reasons (self-deprecation, mockery). But that doesn't have much to do with face claims. You could specifically use a character of the archetype as your face but I've seen people use the pink-haired guy from Fate for a cis man, enby, and trans man before on separate occasions which... I wouldn't do, because I think that character's tacky, but it reinforces what a lot of people are saying in this thread, anyway.

I had done this a while back and genuinely felt the same thing. I enjoyed the plots that you could create but people kinda took it too seriously sometimes to have fun with it. It kinda ruined the fun for me.
I wish I could say I'm enjoying the plots but I've been ghosted already LOL But I do see some of the plot lines, and the fighting/survival ones seem cool, just not the interpersonal or romantic ones. When I think "social" and "romantic," I think anything but cats.

Also low key jealous I haven't rp'ed a pairing before :'[

I joined a warriors cats rp site for the memes + nostalgia... this is not as exciting as it felt as a kid. Like... what do you do...? What do cats do? What do you write about other than Stripedass caught a bird! Mintfoot was there and congratulated him! Until a badger/sickness/ambitious evil cat/random fire comes along and everyone dies, anyway.

(   o  v  o   )

I remember I used Simon Blackquill (canonically male) for a female character because I thought his hair had a "unkempt" quality and I ended up really attached to the face. But I don't remember her ever getting a lot of traction, and I don't know whether it's my gut or just being self-conscious -- either way, I wanted to ask: would a FC of a canonically male character used for a female character turn you off, and under what conditions? Tangentially: how tacky is using a long-haired anime boy to rep a female character, scale of 1 to 10.

Primarily, I'm looking at this from an angle of respect. I'm not really concerned because "my girl doesn't have big bob," I'm concerned because I might be misunderstanding or that my intentions might be misunderstood, especially by trans or non-binary people. (this prob outs me, i'll clarify i use 'any'/all pronouns online only to take attention off my gender but i'm cis irl)

I put "trans" in parenthesis in the title because I marked the character down as "trans female" in her app, but I don't know if that idea came about naturally or afterwards with me feeling I had to "justify" a "masculine" design, as in, traditionally masculine body type, identifying female.

Anyway, I didn't put this under Advice because it could turn into a broader discussion, if not just me learning that people already do this, lol

For fun because Calyrex single-handed killed my interest in Pokemon RP ;-;

Hypothetically, what I would want for my ideal Pokemon site that hasn't been done by other sites: simple battle system; stripped-down; world-building!! Nobody world-builds...

1. I think you need a battle system. Writing combat without a system is very tedious. There's no incentive for someone to win because there's no assurance that someone can lose. Theoretically, battles could go on forever until the players involved get bored. Ripping something equivalent to the games is overwhelming and would likely result in the opposite end of the scale in regards to tedium, so I would look into some basic ttrpg systems for inspiration like Roll 20. You could observe combat threads on other RP sites and determine whether or not they work, and shape your system accordingly.

What other types of systems would you need implementing, though? I'm just assuming the most necessary one. Like, will players be catching Pokemon -- do you intend to moderate that? Will there be breeding -- do you intend to moderate that?

2. Out of the two, I would prefer modern. If you wanted a twist related to isekai, I think doubling down on some of the sci-fi elements of the series could be fun.

3. I hate classes, personally. I don't see the point unless it's faction-based. I'd rather it be Captain Crunch Oops! All Breeders or Oops! All Coordinators than have like fifteen different systems competing for attention, 'cause that's what ultimately happens.

4. Nani the fuck. Sure?? (I guess this is why I don't like medieval LMAO)

5. Monthly. Idk don't you like the catharsis of kicking people off... is that just me.....

6. Honestly, I like Kuroya's idea of a panfandom Pokemon site, just for the meme of, like, Dante the Pokemon Trainer. I think I would lean all-original because lol

God, I'm sorry, I forgot this was getting hits. Thank you two so much!

I want to update my interests with more (hyper) specific 'wants' just in case I've missed something while searching around. Jcink, ProBoards, doesn't matter, it can be fandom or original, and I'm open to RL faces. I just really want to RP:
  • Magical girl warriors - or someplace magical girl friendly: potential for team dynamics, monsters and/or designated bad guys, and a balance between slice-of-life and action.
  • A cheesy shonen sports anime setup! I saw a Haikyuu!! RP around before, something like that.
  • A setting someplace underwater. An underwater, Atlantis-like city or something. Doesn't have to encompass the whole board, I swear there was a fandom RP site that had an underwater city... Anyway, it's just been on the brain.
