honestly, real talk? when i'm skinning, i do the entire design in html on codepen and then just replace the values i need to replace with what's in the jcink html templates for anything that's in the webpages (and the page will be divided out into what works in what areas + what it corresponds to) and what's in the global variables for anything in the board wrappers.

if you do webpages that you want to be able to use in the board wrappers (like for affiliates), you have to turn them on and enable include keys for board wrappers, then you pull off the <% BLEH %> key in the general webpages thingie (which you set via the include key input).

custom profile fields can be used in the wrappers and any html templates that give you the option to when going through that section (see the member list for examples). you figure out which one is which now by going to acp > users and groups > custom profile fields and it's the template variable.

<% SUBACCOUNTS %> is one of a few missing global variables - it's the account switcher drop down. i honestly don't remember the rest. i know i typically slowly yeet out a lot of the stuff from the wrapper when i'm ready (the entire logo and skin selector classes go, the <% SHOUTBOX %> gets yeeted immediately, and i pull the navigation out into its own bar typically since that's your "board name > category name > subboard name" list tree thing).

you can code stuff to show/hide based on the <!--g_id--> in the html and then doing css stuff for like. group-1 class vs group-2 class, as an easy hack for different color profiles and such. actually, almost any of the <!-- SOMETHING --> fields, you can actually use to manipulate stuff via if/else statements or css class stuff


i'm half-asleep so i'm not sure how coherent i am or how useful i am actually being but. honestly, like i said, i'd recommend just code the look you want in a live view program like codepen and then copy-paste it into the wrappers and html templates and slowly go through the code and switch out each test variable to the actual needed variable from the wiki or the acp.


So I literally don't have to give a damn about anything other than the <!--|thingies|--> and <% whatsits %>? Everything else I can just code myself in code pen and then insert those things where they need to go? Okay, so then the way boards on forums are set up, layouts and looks, etc, is that all just css then?

Alright... So, I've been getting into jcink skinning as you can tell by my gallery page. There's just one thing that stands in my way defiantly. The bleep bleep, bleeping html templates. I don't understand them. at all.

Do they just work like webpages, kinda sorta in the sense that like I can just make a thing in html and it'll do the thing all over the board once I mess with the css? How do I go about utilizing grid and the little <!--|thingies|-->? I've scoured the internet for some sort of guide that isn't from the jcink wiki and came up with bubkis, or if I did find something it was dated and not very helpful.

What I need is a bit of time 1 on 1 with someone who knows way more than me and is patient enough to walk me through what the hell I'm supposed to do with them. Or at least some basic explanations and open to some questions.

Halp please. I cry.

A Devil May Cry x Bayonetta RP Interest Check




About
My Devil Trigger, will be an upcoming roleplay site primarily based off of the popular character action games Devil May Cry and Bayonetta with considerations for canon characters from other character action franchises (Metal Gear Rising Revengance, Ninja Gaiden, Punishing: Gray Raven, Honkai Impact 3rd, etc) as long as players can tweak the characters to fit to the site's setting and lore. Play as any of the Devil May Cry or Bayonetta
cannons in a world that combines the lore of both franchises.







Species
The site will have three playable species groups, (Human, Devil, Dea) with each group having it's own list of sub-species to choose from that will each have their own dedicated lore that falls inline with the DMC and Bayonetta franchises.

Oh the places you'll go
The site will have a main location known as the City of Resonance, a city built on top of an ancient Nexus point caused by the vibrational resonance between all of the realms and everything in between. Beyond that the site will have the Underworld; (Inferno), the Overworld (Paradisio), The human World (Purgatorio) each with their own locations within with plenty of things to do.

Things to do
Bounty Missions are in character missions that you're character can take on which involve some sort of task. Think of them like quests really. Typically they'll involve hunting a demon, laguna, or enemy of some kind which is run by staff. Complete the bounty to claim things like extra orbs, special items or weapons for your characters, etc.

Escape Limbo Limbo is a realm between the human and demon realm. It's unique because it is alive, prescient, and It has a very nasty habit in Resonance City of pulling people into it and slowly feeding off of their souls. Random event that will happen occasionally, one or more players and their characters will be randomly selected for a thread with the single win condition; Escape.

Multiple Storylines will be available in all three realms (Paradisio, Purgatorio, Inferno)

Mechanics
My Devil Trigger isn't going to have any kind of classical power systems or structures in place that are enforced. The games are all about stylishly kicking the crap out of your enemies, collecting points to unlock cool stuff, then using that stuff to kick the crap out of your enemies even more stylishly and we're very much going to try and follow that trend.

Items and Weapons
Players can collect in game items such as devil arms, angel weapons, accessories. While these weapons/items don't provide any quantified stats they do come with their own nifty abilities that can potentially be passed on to the characters. Example: A character possessing and wielding a fire based devil arm now having the ability to use fire based attacks in their posts.

Arsenal System
Based off of the weapon selection menu in the Devil May Cry games. The Arsenal System will be a very loose inventory system where a player choses any devil arms/weapons that their characters have collected before entering a thread and only using those selected weapons in the thread should the need arise. Typically Arsenal System mechanics will only be enforced during Bounty Missions and Escape RPs, otherwise it's an optional system that runs parallel with the site.

The Gates of Hell
The Gates of Hell is a bar in a pocket dimension upkept by the Ancient One, Rodin. It acts as a secondary site shop where you can trade in your orbs (points) for items and weapons. Specifically Devil Arms. But there's more, you can roleplay there and potentially find yourself taking on a contract or two from Rodin himself.



Questions, Comments, Loud animal noises


When would this open? I'm currently skinning the site on my own and am still very much a noob with coding, let alone jcink skinning. I'm also juggling doing this while helping with another site, and also going through a move. So it might be a while unless none of you care about a barebones site or there are potentially people who want to help.

Do you want/need help? Desperately, like not so desperate that I'm begging, but there are definitely things that I'm completely at a loss for when it comes to coding (like light/dark mode and making the site and elements mobile friendly), and the jcink platform in general. If you want to lend a hand I'm cool with being randomly messaged on the discords or PM'ed on the site.

Is there a discord? Nope, at least not yet. Currently focused on getting the boards up first. So stay tuned I guess and once a discord does become a thing then I'll drop a link in this thread.

Is it going to be premium / 3-3-3? Not at first, currently moving and moving means getting a new job and while I'm currently employed now, money is t-i-g-h-t at the moment. It's one of the biggest reasons why I'm undertaking the skinning and coding by myself. But the plan is in fact to get to a point where the site is jcink premium. That being said the age limit is going to be 18+ regardless. We'll just have to make due with a 2-2-2 site rating for a while.

minimalist & plotter apps are valid and cool. come to the dark side where we focus more on our RP goals than on 600 word history sections.



How does this even work? Because I've been curious about it for a while now. Being able to not have to spend a million years and just as many words on shit like history, appearance, and etc seems nice. But how do you go about judging if a character does or doesn't have the capability to completely take a dump on lore, or power levels etc?

There is some sort of coding demon that people are secretly selling their souls to in order to understand how to skin a jcink forum and they're not hookin' a brother up and it makes me sad.

The longer it stays in my head, the more I want to make a combined Bayonetta x Devil May Cry site. I'd be 50% of the way there if I just knew how to transfer my random coding scribbles to an actual jcink forum.
I said it in your graphic gallery, but I'd be so down doing some heavy leg work to help a site like that flourish considering.


I'll likely DM you eventually if that's cool. I'm still wishy washy on the idea and I'd at least rather have some things set up first like typing out lore information and stuff.

also i was going to respond to this and forgot, bc i think this could be interesting to combine the lore from both franchises. would this be stat based or no? i know the power scaling/leveling would lend itself to that but i could see it going either way.

also, re: your issue with jcink. yeah, that sucks man. jcink's got a wicked learning curve, and i feel like the wiki that john set up to help people code for it needs to be updated/overhauled, bc it's kind of hard to navigate and is otherwise just outdated. like the last i checked it doesn't even have the right stylesheet on it lmao


I may very well make a genuine interest check then, just to test the waters a little and not take away from this thread. But to answer your question, neither game really has level scaling in it, it's all about wracking up points and then buying abilities for weapons and styles you unlock throughout the game. So some sort of point shop with small things like Bounties and Secret Missions that award points. Then those points can be used to unlock stuff. Like skills, or styles, Devil arms, weapons, or other things. Would have to figure it all out and I would definitely make it more in line with the games.

If you haven’t started doing it already, I recommend to start copying jcink’s stylesheet onto codepen when you start coding a new skin project. It’s a bit clunky to navigate, yeah, but it’ll make transferring the skin to jcink 10000% easier. It also will then have some things already written for you that way that you can just go back and edit later to your liking, like the links and whatnot. Total lifesaver.



My biggest hang up right now is the whole, what goes where in terms of html and have it all line up correctly with of all the <% thing %>'s and <!--|other things|-->

These are absolutely stunning!

And yeah, I code and mess around constantly (especially when I was on break from writing/sites) so I know the feeling.

That said, Devil May Cry is one of those fandoms that could be a ton of fun and a lot of potential but also a lot of work to sort lore and setting out well enough to make it engaging enough to write too (which could be said about so many fandoms these days I guess).

Yeah, thankfully I have loads of experience running my fair share of devil may cry sites. (circa 2009, 2012, 2014) It's just a matter of this will not get out of my brain. Thank you for the feedback ^_^

So you ever been stricken by the urge to make something for sites but just don't have the time or want to waste the effort in building, advertising, and running a site?

That's where I'm at. Right now I've only got mock ups and designs, and some of the things I'm making in coding just to see what I can actually do and stuff. Though all of this is going to be screenshots. Feel free to leave comments or whatever.

header and nav bar for imaginary site - still needs more work tho. margins for the little diamonds need to be tweaked to fit better, would like to do a transparent gradient overlay on the picture in the big diamond. Just got to figure out how.



Board layout - specifically the getting started area. Essentially it would be a category, and the diamonds would be boards in that category. margins are wonky, haven't figured out how to fix yet.

Any weird google searches you had to do for rping?

I honestly can't remember most of them. There have efinitely been a lot of weird ones... I guess I've had to look up some fashion for guys, including swimsuits... Yeah. Had to dig into the right direction for that.

I also looked up the largest fossilized poops that exist but IDK if that was related to rping or if it was just another Tuesday for me

Not weird, but it was a bit embarrassing at how I had to look up "how to talk on phone" because I made an impromptu phone thread that turned to a call and my character is a social mfker. i realized it was way out of my league and I've never faked it till I made it so hard until that thread



Currently I'm doing a plot that involves a lot more martial arts mysticism and philosophy so my search history has been pretty tame so far, just mostly topping up on information about Chi/Qi philosophies, wuxia stuff, legends and tales, etc. Been kind of nice actually lmao
