it's hard for me to think about without making the roleplay like a game. but i think a feature that would be attractive to me is community goals. these goals would contribute to adding a feature to town that wasn't there before. these might enable a new event to occur or a new shop to open up. for example:

- some projects might require characters to donate straight currency. like the town building a museum and that introducing artifact hunting or just... a compendium that characters can contribute to.
- some might require an amount of specific items bought from the store for a recipe. this might unlock a feature that makes town life easier or a new barn/coop animal to collect.
- others could be unlocked through a certain amount of posts in a thread. ie. everyone posting in a community garden thread and at the end of the month, earning crops/items to use or sell. even just site currency.

not sure on how to incentivize sole character upgrade purchases w/o having game mechanics but i do believe community contributions of some kind would be neat to see.

i wonder if the sign i needed to get into panfandoms is that i miss playing series canon characters. esp when there are ocs in the mix. the amount of passion i put into reframing side characters that appear for one story arc and never again was my whole existence once upon a time.

i really cherish the memories of all the rp partners / friends i've had in the past who i really clicked with. getting back into dragon ball after a while and just remembering old plots and ocs i shared with people really warms me up.

even though i don't talk to / rp with a lot of them anymore, i will always keep their characters close to my own. that goes for all the other fandoms and genres i've written in.

i wish this hobby had more slower sites or that they were advertised more.

most places i've tried to touch back in seem relatively fast pace overall in terms of what the people i've been around like on average. even the speed that events go by. it all makes it hard to get back into the hobby. esp with rl obligations. since i found posting once a week or later tends to cause most people to question activity or lose interest.

wish there was an easier solution. i miss it.

i like playing the roles associated to site canons. not to feel important, but just that i like writing high-ranking individuals. it's all i do in my personal writing time. but i don't like playing site canons for a few reasons:

in public spaces, i've seen how those roles make people turn in (and out) on each other. it boils down to not everyone gets along, nor do they have exemplary communication skills. some people take canons and shirk the responsibility it comes with. others take it too seriously.

the responsibility tagged onto them tends to end up putting them against unrealistic expectations. especially on larger population sites and/or factions. you're expected to write with a majority of the players and push faction plot. then, if there is an event, you're expected to participate if your faction is involved. micromanaging and organizing the ooc faction plotting too.

that is all on top of trying to balance it with personal plotting and threads unrelated to the role. even other characters you want to play.

granted, i know it's not like that everywhere and i'm explaining the extreme side of it. but it's what i've noticed and experienced (in varying degrees) in the spaces i've been in. i think it can be rewarding to slot yourself in those types of roles. but for me, the cons outweigh the pros. they're a lot nicer and easier to manage on semi-private and private spaces. so i tend to grab them there more.

i feel bad for all my friends who have to sit there, watching me send them walls of text about the unique differences between the shogun novel(s) and the show. because it is so cool how i am in this wider perspective lens into the complexity of all these characters. they're so well written and articulated despite the differences between the show and book.

screaming because i'm in this historical hyperfixation where i need to know and understand everything about the time period and the cultural state and developments.

i hate being upfront about most things because of numerous bad experiences so i try to set a precedent early on of what to expect.

for example; i'll ask how often the person replies on average (unless i know) before starting the thread and make it clear what my speeds / commitment levels are. even sometimes i'll give permission for them to archive if i take too long / dip out so they don't have to ask. getting a mutual understanding early on avoids awkward (for me) conversations.

i tend to be flaky nowadays so i feel for people like me, it can save face a bit to be more communicative right off the bat.

i think one of the biggest things i've been slowly learning with my job this year is that it's okay to take a day when i'm sick or not feeling 100%. the me of a few years ago would scoff and say, "how dare you?"

/doublepost

but man, i feel you! 😭 last year, i didn't take off at all. which is great on paper but then it creeps up on you. meanwhile, all year watching other people take full advantage of their days / occurances makes me wanna kick myself for not doing the same.

sometimes i'm like... "is it the anxiety or am i a workaholic?"

reading shogun and watching it has been the ride of my life. i'm always itching for (historical fiction or fantasy) sengoku era japan-based rp and this intensifies it.

will say, this is looking strongly to be my book of the year. 🤭

in my perspective on the topic (as an animanga rper), the major issue is that there aren't really like... large hubs for coding resources by role-players, made for role-players. at least, none (that aren't closed down) of note aside from pixel perfect that i've seen advertised and widely used. like yeah, there are discord servers? but finding resources in them is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

the standards are growing ever higher for aesthetics and inclusivity across the board. the knowledge required to know html/css/javascript is rising too. i really feel for the people that have to learn how to code for this hobby in its current state. even with the resources out there for the language outside of a forum context, it's a daunting task.

*insert grandma emoji here* i remember the days where bbcode and basic html knowledge was good enough!! /shakes fist
