kind of tired of the formality of power restriction that goes beyond what the setting would allow. it would be nice if more roleplays operated on trust rather than hard rules. the more creativity, the better, i think.

when i find folks who are more interested in a collaborative story than in "winning," it doesn't matter how op their character is. the scene is going to be a good time for all involved.

i've had bad exp with with and it's not even with an op character. it was a completely human but experienced (ie child soldier assassin) character vs my ordinary civilian who recently gained psychic powers. but they were just so invested in winning bc - and this is when i confronted them about it - they can't imagine their character losing. i don't even mind losing the lil fight we're having overall, but i pointed out that they're contradicting their last post to not get caught by surprised by my character. they just didn't want to give my character any sort of brief leverage because their character never drops their guard down. so op abilities aren't even the one at fault. it's the people, and especially how they react when you ask them nicely about it.

like at that point, you just go, "oh sorry, this isn't a good experience with you. what can we do about it?" i love saying this but people can do, in fact, edit their posts. retconning is 100% okay. completely ignoring the awkward thing and never talking about it is 100%. there's no way the flow of the story can be perfect. it's important than everyone gets to have fun, and whatever mistakes we make, we talk about it and learn from it and move on.

and to be honest, it's not like i've been exempted from going overboard too. i have this two very specific scenes in a fight scenes that makes me cringe whenever i remember them. i know what it's like to be in either side, and i think communication is just extraordinary better, since it suits the flexivity in rping the most. hard rules make it like we're doing a try hard souls run when it should be like proximity chat among us where we work on house rules and operate on making content

Just adding to the powers discussion- I do have to agree it is primarily the people. Sadly, the only solution is people learning to accept their characters are going to lose fights, get caught off guard, etc. I have seen it happen plenty of times, and unfortunately, people like that do occur. They want their character to be the best without realizing how that can affect other role-players and make combat-based or even similar forms of role-play incredibly boring. It is also ignoring the concept of loss being an excellent development moment for some characters; or even struggling through a fight/competition. Either way, I know I would struggle with it since to me it cheapens the interaction and overall creates boredom in an interaction unless a solution can be found; I would never even need to win.

I know I personally prefer keeping relatively equalized full power ranges. It is partially cause I do not fully trust people who join, but also because to me it is more engaging overall. Struggle is fun, I like struggle. Lol

Personally, I treat combat more as a narrative device to employ, rather than an activity unto itself separate from "regular" roleplaying.

There's something utterly disappointing about seeing a character using a name very specific to your homeland/culture, getting excited about meeting a compatriot...except they just wanted something exotic and have no clue about your country at all.

in addition to this, i would hope that more people actually put in the time and effort to research the places their characters are from. not to be like super fluent in the language or culture or anything like that, but at least a little effort if you make characters from other places T.T it's the little things that make characters unique sometimes, and knowing background culture really does help with that.
