"Hmm... Are you comfortable talking to me, Itsuki?"
i think my favorite answer is almost always a nice blend of all three— but i think i really value being able to set the setting, and i think it's an underrated part of writing a starter. i'm a really visual person, and it really helps to set a mood for the rp when i know what characters' surroundings look like! i like having characters interact with the setting as they speak and move, so it's like a fun treat when someone provides me with a detailed location for our thread. obviously Just Setting doesn't make for a compelling starter; i just like having the extra sentence or two there to know more about the circumstances of the thread!

i generally will try to reply as i've gotten them, but as i've gotten more busy with upcoming grad + moving stuff, it's been hard to keep up with stuff immediately... ;w; so i tend to do a big heap of replies every 2-3 days at night, since that's when i'm less busy! i don't think i prefer to hoard threads— if i could reply asap, i would— but, man, it's tough to get to everything within a day

i'm trying to be more courteous about replying on time, though, esp. with my 'main'/more active character... i think it's generally good practice to reply once a week/once every two weeks without further notice, since i think it tells people you're interested in their character + your thread

sometimes i feel like it's so hard to take want ads where there's already so much written up about the existing character already, even though there are some people i see with really fun and interesting want ads that I'd love to plot/rp with... wails...

want ads that you can slot existing characters into, my beloved,

love writing characters who are genuinely awkward and uncool... something very special about brainstorming just how cringe someone can get through actions and dialogue rather than the other way around

i think the main thing i've always relied on to differentiate my characters as their Own People and really establish them in my mind is to draw them separately from their face claim and/or imagine them with specific facial details that their face claim doesn't actually have... despite your drawing experience/skill level, parts of characters' appearances are going to suit their personality/lived experiences a lot of the time, from scars and how they accessorize. it helps me look at their profile images onsite and/or think of them in my head and go "oh! that's mycharacter lastname!" instead of thinking to their fc instead!

i also like marking relationship trackers with a level of trust out of 5 when i don't have time to write blurbs for every character mine's interacted with/when trackers get Really Long. sometimes it says a lot just to know how much a character is willing to trust another character with something important to them... from a 0 ("i would actively hide things from this character out of contempt") to a 5 ("i would share my most precious memories with this character")
