There's something utterly disappointing about seeing a character using a name very specific to your homeland/culture, getting excited about meeting a compatriot...except they just wanted something exotic and have no clue about your country at all.

sob sob sob i just want friends

in addition to this, i would hope that more people actually put in the time and effort to research the places their characters are from. not to be like super fluent in the language or culture or anything like that, but at least a little effort if you make characters from other places T.T it's the little things that make characters unique sometimes, and knowing background culture really does help with that.

I'm probably guilty of this, because I'll make characters whose parents were in touch with their historical culture who aren't in touch with it themselves ...

Wouldn’t that be…obvious? Why else would you make a character from a specific country or culture?

I love the idea of getting to know a new character. I know who they might be, but I only really start getting to the good, juicy bits after some roleplaying and having them interact with the world and other characters. Alternatively, I like to explore how different settings can change a character (outside of some core characteristics).

That said, I've been roleplaying the same character for 3+ years haha.

I miss the vibe of old-school forum rps. back when i was young and dumb and didn't know what a 'face claim' was. i felt way more creative than i do now because i wasn't restricted by what i could do. but, eh, that's probably my nostalgia talking LOL i definitely remember the toxicity and don't miss that!

that being said.... WHEN DID WE ALL GET SO OLD?!

"Hmm... Are you comfortable talking to me, Itsuki?"
it's so nice to update a character's relationship tracker and realize they've gotten to know and befriend so many people over the course of an rp.... almost enough to make up for the fact that i have to write So many blurbs to fill this whole thing out T.T

Like most things that happen over the course of numerous years, we tend to be blind to the gradual changes that occur. Maybe you used to be able to run 1 kilometre without stopping, and then you can only run 900 metres but you think it's fine, and then you can only run 700 metres and you think it's only a little less, and so on. You're 21, and that's just past your teenage years, you can still wear those ankle-length pants with sneakers and a hoodie. At 22, well, that's only a year older than 21, and at 23, you're only a year older than 22, until eventually you walk the streets and some snot-faced brat points at you and snickers.

"Lookit that old fogey! That's so cringe." His friends roar with laughter. You look over your shoulder to see if there's some other old fogey there, but you see no one.

You hurry home, the boy's words echoing in your head. When you close the door behind you, the soft thrumming of his words have become a thunderous drumming, crowding out all other thought.

You look in the mirror, and you realise.

You're old and cringe. Ashamed, you take off the hoodie and grab the pullover your estranged aunt bought you for Christmas twenty years ago.

You're forty.

I've got a hurricane in my head, I can't feel a thing, but it's better than dead
ya know. getting older in the community is interesting simply because most everyone else is too. there's a ton of us in or around our 30's. i rarely run into people under the age of 25. i know the answer is probably discord, but where are the teenagers? -not in some weird way- but like i remember the forum communities being absolutely packed with teens in the mid 2ks. and now we're all 25+ and still here, but the teens are not. do they just not know forum rp exists? or is it just something the millenials took with them lol

I used to "hide" the fact that I was on the spectrum for the most part in the (RP) community because I was afraid that others would walk on eggshells around me or avoid me altogether. I became pretty good at masking in real life, so I guess that negative mindset was the norm for past Lilac. Now that I'm seeing so much acceptance, I wonder what misunderstandings I could have prevented in the past if I disclosed it then. Hindsight is 20/20, sigh.

I think I also had the same problem being on the spectrum myself, but I'm also getting better at managing my boundaries and being more open with it. Could I have stopped more misunderstandings, maybe - but considering misunderstandings are so commonplace even today over some things that just aren't straightforward sometimes, it's a learning experience even now really. I walked into a misunderstanding just recently and while everyone assures me that I didn't miss anything, I still have to wonder did I.
