Consumed by the idea of a pixel art site theme where everyone's uploaded account avatars are li'l sprites of their characters, and the IC boards are set up so that the little pixel art representing the board, yes? Loads the last poster's avatar (a sprite of them) in such a way that it looks like the character is hanging out in the location. Like, a coffee shop board that's got a picture of its storefront visible on the homepage, and the last poster's sprite shows up inside the shop window like they're inside, AAAAAAAAAAAAH.

I'm a garbage artist, and it would be a huge undertaking to offer to do spritework for every accepted character on a site, BUT THE TEMPTATION... THE TEMPTATION..........
this is such a cool idea 😭 just commenting to say i swear i have seen something reminiscent to it, except not with last posters per board. it was a site where there's a world map and character locations update on the map depending on which board/thread they last posted in. i wish i had the link...

i wonder if for sprites, you could set up some presets. basically like bald/naked sprites and a handful of clothes/hairstyles and the users pick based on a limited number of options. and then you could always allow players to have a non-pixel art icon of their character somewhere to show the details that don't appear in the pixel art (like how in JRPGs like Fire Emblem, the sprite is generic and there's a huge character render that's more detailed)

when making sprites, i've often used the Spriter's Resource as a reference! they have a lot of sprites from actual games, maybe you could model sprites based on your favorite game there? though yeah there's no getting around that it's a lot of work like you said lol. but your idea is awesome!!

just finished Little Witch Academia and Cardcaptor Sakura (s1). i've enjoyed the pastel slice of life magical happiness but now it's time to swerve into some crime drama! i might catch up with Babylon Berlin because apparently season 4 has been out forever and i had no idea...

have been rewatching succession again... god the things this show has done for fuckass family drama enjoyers
i'm still mad about how i was on a 10 hr flight and decided to finally try succession thinking since the airplane had only one season available surely it would be the first season, right?

it was the last season.

i spoiled everything and only realized a few hours in. i thought, wow this show's crazy, no exposition, everyone's referencing deep stuff from the past... what an interesting way to start the story 🙈

obv i'm dumb for not realizing but i can tell the show is well-made because i didn't understand the business plotting but still found the character drama extremely absorbing (especially Shiv). maybe one day i can jedi mind trick myself into forgetting what i saw and try again (kind of hard to forget the v critical moment in the wedding episode though...)

since you mentioned something that works well on desktop and mobile, i've been using Notion to keep track of characters, posts, and storyboarding stuff. it's free to use (unless you want a bunch of other functionality that comes with the paid plan). i was using Google Docs before but i like Notion more now.

Notion can be used for all sorts of things (it was used at my workplace for the company wiki), but to keep it simple: i like that it has a light/dark mode toggle and font size toggle. i like that i can insert pics of my characters where i'm writing. i like that it's easy to collapse sections of text into a toggle with one click if they get too long (for example, i can have a page of all my posts and toggles with Post 1, Post 2, etc). i like that i can organize pages into a bigger table of contents in the sidebar. i like that everything looks nice and easy to read without having to format much.

there are templates to use with Notion if you want to get more serious with organizing pages. i like using the table template to turn my character bios into a nice gallery for easy viewing/referencing.

imo forum headers are the most fun to code bc they're the first thing the user sees and the most customizable part of the forum! i'm guilty of making tons of headers for RPs that don't/will never exist lol. it's addicting.

apart from that, i love making board mods. that's honestly how i started when i didn't know how to build an entire skin, so it's nostalgic. i'm impressed by the trends in jcink RPs - so many board variations depending on the category!

my least favorite thing to code is board statistics (or user center? the footer at the bottom of the page). there's just so much info you could put there and i'm too lazy and tired by the time i get to it. it's like that concluding paragraph to an all-nighter essay where you end up phoning it in before you pass out. ha
